Importing connection profiles from IBM Data Studio or Eclipse Data Tools

If you defined Db2 for z/OS database connection profiles in either IBM Data Studio or Eclipse Data tools, you can export them from an IBM® Developer for z/OS® version 15.0.x or earlier workspace, and then import them into version 16.0.6 or version 17.0.0. The import wizard supports connection profiles that are exported from the Data Source Explorer view of the Data perspective.

Restriction: The import wizard does not support connection profiles that are exported from these locations:
  • The Data > Data Descriptors option on the File > Export window.
  • The Data Studio Enterprise Deployment > Configurations option on the File > Export window.
  • The Export pop-up menu on the Data Project Explorer view.
  • The Export toolbar button on the Server Profile Manager view.

Exporting connection profiles

  1. In an IBM Developer for z/OS version 15.0.x or earlier workspace, open the Data Source Explorer view of the Data perspective.
  2. Click the Export Export toolbar button. The Export Connection Profiles window opens.
    Export Connection Profiles
  3. Select the Db2 for z/OS connection profiles you want to export.
  4. To choose an export file location and specify an export file name, click Browse. The default folder is the current workspace folder. The file type for export files is .xml. The following screen capture shows an example of an export file location.
    Export File Location
  5. Select the checkbox to encrypt the export file content or to include the user ID and password to be used for the connection in the export file.
  6. Click OK. The file is saved to the location and file name you specify.

Importing connection profiles

  1. In an IBM Developer for z/OS version 16.0.6 or 17.0.0 workspace, click File > Import, and then, in the Import window, navigate to Db2 for z/OS > Database Connection Profiles and click Next.
  2. Click Browse and navigate to the database connection profiles export file that you created in the IBM Developer for z/OS version 15.0.x or earlier workspace.
  3. Click Next. The wizard loads the exported connection profiles into a table. Each profile is highlighted in the table, and the checkbox beside it is selected.
  4. To import all selected profiles, click Next, or to import only specific profiles, clear some checkboxes and then click Next. The Assign z/OS Connections page opens.
Tip: The Assign z/OS Connections page accommodates several scenarios for assigning z/OS connections to profiles:
    1. If you do not yet have a z/OS connection, or you want to create a new one to import a profile to, click Create z/OS Connection.
    2. If you already have z/OS connections that match the host names in the profiles, then you can click Suggest z/OS Connection to assign profiles to connections.
    3. If you want to import all profiles to the same z/OS connection, then you can select a connection name from the drop-down list and click Set z/OS Connection.
    4. If you need to import the profiles into different z/OS connections, then you can select profiles from the table, assign connections to them, and then finish the import operation.
The remaining steps in this procedure provide specific instructions for each of these scenarios.
  5. Scenario a: To create a z/OS connection before completing the import operation, do these steps:
    1. Click Create z/OS Connection, and complete the Remote z/OS System Connection wizard.
For instructions, see Creating a connection to a z/OS system or watch this demonstration.

    2. Complete one of the next steps, according to the import scenario that is appropriate for your profiles.
  6. Scenario b: To assign the profiles to suggested z/OS connections and complete the import, do these steps:
    1. Click Suggest z/OS Connections, and verify that each profile is assigned to the appropriate z/OS connection.
    2. To complete the import operation, click Finish.
  7. Scenario c: To import all profiles to the same z/OS connection, do these steps:
    1. In the Set z/OS Connection area, select a connection name from the drop-down list.
    2. Click Set z/OS Connection, and verify that each profile is assigned to the z/OS connection that you selected.
    3. To complete the import operation, click Finish.
  8. Scenario d: To import the profiles into different z/OS connections, do these steps:
    1. Highlight one or more profiles in the table.
    2. To assign a z/OS connection to a highlighted profile, in the Set z/OS Connection area, select a connection name from the drop-down list.
    3. Click Set z/OS Connection, and verify that each profile is assigned to the z/OS connection that you selected.
    4. Repeat the highlighting and assigning steps until all profiles are assigned to a connection.
    5. To complete the import operation, click Finish.
  9. To verify that the profiles were imported into the correct connections, in the Remote Systems view, expand a connection name, and then expand Db2 for z/OS > Db2 for z/OS Connections. Each imported connection is given a unique name in the workspace by appending a _<number> as needed to the connection name.

Demonstration

This animation demonstrates the export and import scenario in which existing z/OS connections match the host names in the profiles, and the Suggest z/OS Connections function assigns profiles to connections.
