Drill-down capabilities

Drill-down capabilities enable you to explore aggregated decision data at multiple levels.

Drill-down capabilities enable you to explore aggregated decision data at multiple levels. A drill-down chart starts with a high-level view and provides additional layers that reveal more detailed information when a user selects a chart element, such as a bar, slice, or point. Each drill-down layer refines the context of the previous one, making it easier to identify patterns, investigate anomalies, and understand data relationships without creating additional dashboards.

A drill-down chart consists of:

  • A primary layer, which defines the initial measurement and visualization
  • One or more drill-down layers, each using a different group by field
  • A final layer, which can use any supported measurement and visualization type

Chart creation behavior

When you create a chart and select Drill-down as the measurement type, the chart opens in edit mode with the Add layer panel displayed. The first layer uses the Metric measurement by default, and you can choose from other measurement types, such as Period Metric, KPI, Period KPI, or Data. The Data measurement displays a warning because it does not support further drill-down and can only be used as the final layer.

Each drill-down layer must use a different group by field. Selecting a group by field automatically updates the visualization type to one that supports grouping. For example, selecting a keyword field may switch the chart to a pie chart.

Layer management

The Drill-down layers section in the chart editor lists each layer with:

  • A measurement icon that reflects the selected measurement type
  • A name and description
  • Controls to edit or delete the layer

Layers are processed in sequence. You can add layers, remove layers, or change the order of layers except for the final layer if it uses a measurement that does not support further drill-down.

Viewing drill-down results

When viewing a dashboard, selecting a value in a drill-down-enabled chart displays the next layer of detail. Each layer shows data relevant to the selected value. You can return to previous layers or exit drill-down mode to view the full chart again.

Usage considerations

  • Each drill-down layer requires a group by field
  • The visualization type adjusts automatically based on the chosen field
  • The final layer is the only layer that can use the Data measurement
  • Removing or altering a layer affects the drill-down path
  • Drill-down is not available for text or table visualizations

Drill-down charts allow you to start from a single aggregated metric and progressively uncover details across multiple dimensions. They provide an interactive way to navigate complex datasets and understand how decision results vary by category, time, or other attributes.
