Creating and customizing dashboards

Create a dashboard to organize a set of data visualizations called charts.

About this task

A dashboard contains charts that display metrics, key performance indicators (KPIs), and other measurements that help you assess the status of a business objective or process. A dashboard provides a big-picture view of these measurements to help you decide what areas you would like to focus on and explore. Each chart represents an aspect of your business performance, for example the number of orders per year. The creation of a dashboard allows you to juxtapose these measurements in a way that provides you valuable information at one glance.

Procedure

To create a dashboard that will contain one or more charts:

  1. Create a dashboard.
    1. Go to Business Performance Center.
    2. From the Dashboards tab, select Create.
    3. Enter a unique name.
      The description is optional.
    4. Optional: Set the Time range for your data.
A time range is a filter that selects only the data within a specified period of time. This filter is applicable to all the charts in your dashboard. However, you can later change the default time range per chart from the Filters tab.
    5. Define who can see the dashboard in the list.
      • Set the dashboard to Only me.
      • Set the dashboard to Everyone to create a public dashboard that everyone in your organization who has the proper data permissions can copy, duplicate, and export, but not edit. Only you, as the owner, can edit it.
Note: Like a public dashboard, a dashboard template is visible to everyone. However, as the owner you can edit a public dashboard, but not a template, by using the graphical user interface.

You can change the visibility of the dashboard from the list at any time after creation.

    6. Select Create to create the dashboard.
  2. Create a chart.
    1. From your dashboard, select Chart.
    2. Enter a unique name and a telling description.
The description is optional but the name is mandatory: The Create button becomes available only after you start typing a name.
    3. Select a measurement.
    4. Click Create.

The chart is displayed in the dashboard area as a tile, which you can move around.

What to do next

  1. Add more charts and customize them.
    • By selecting Edit from the overflow menu Chart options local menu, you can select a monitoring source, add or remove filters, predictions, visualizations, thresholds, depending on what makes sense for the type of your chart and the data that you expect to see.
    • When the chart is in editing mode, by clicking the Edit configuration icon edit icon next to the chart name, you can change its name, description, and type.
Tip: Be aware that changing the type of a chart affects which visualization options are available. For example, you cannot define thresholds for metric charts nor predictions for heat maps or tables.
  2. Select the monitoring source that corresponds to the data you want to monitor. If you do not see the data that you need, ask your administrator for the relevant data permissions.
