Db2 database product editions and deployment options

You can choose from several Db2 product editions that are designed to scale to your ongoing business needs. For more information about entitlement, rights, and obligations, see the license agreement for your product or offering.

Details of the features that are included in each Db2 database product edition are covered in Functionality in Db2 product editions.

Common code base

With Db2, all editions have the same code base. The technical differences among editions are resource limitations and advanced features or tool sets. In this way, applications that are written for any Db2 edition can easily be moved to any other Db2 edition on any operating system platform that is supported by Db2.

Db2 AI editions

With the release of Db2 12.1.4, IBM introduces the AI line of database solutions.

These Db2 editions are redesigned to provide agentic intelligence to daily administration tasks. The first phase of this functionality is provided through an enhanced database management console, the IBM Db2 Genius Hub. This enhanced console replaces the Db2 Intelligence Center and comes bundled with the Db2 AI Advanced and Db2 AI Standard editions.

The Genius Hub brings AI-driven reasoning and agentic capabilities into the Db2 management experience, creating an intelligent operating layer that helps teams move from reactive operations to proactive execution. Rather than requiring teams to constantly observe, diagnose, and react, the Genius Hub proactively maintains system health, detects emerging issues, and guides response, allowing database teams to focus on continuous optimization and governance.

The intelligent capabilities of the Genius Hub are organized around three core operational areas that define how day-to-day database operations change:
Maintenance
Handles recurring operational work such as engine updates, patching, health checks, performance optimization, and backup and recovery. By automating these well-bounded tasks, Db2 Genius Hub reduces ongoing manual effort while helping maintain consistent performance and availability across the database estate.
Detection
Continuously analyzes workload behavior and system signals to identify anomalies early and prevent issues from materializing. This includes detecting locking behavior, query regressions, and workload queuing before they impact users, reducing the volume of alerts that require human attention.
Response
When issues do occur, Db2 Genius Hub shortens time to resolution by performing what-changed analysis, multi-step investigation, and deep log analysis. Clear, contextual explanations are surfaced to guide next steps, reducing time spent on manual root-cause investigation.

Db2 editions and upgrade path

Db2 AI Advanced and Advanced editions
The Db2 Advanced editions are designed for enterprises that demand unparalleled performance and reliability for their mission-critical workloads. With no compute or memory limits and no feature restrictions, they deliver a comprehensive database solution for both transactional and analytical workloads. Experience high performance, continuous availability, and robust workload management across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.
Both Db2 Advanced editions can be deployed on Linux®, UNIX, or Windows servers of any size, from one processor to hundreds of processors, and on both physical and virtual servers.
The Db2 Advanced edition pricing is based on a per Virtual Processor Core (VPC) charge metric for both production and non-production environments (like development and testing), while also offering an Authorized User (AU) charge metric exclusively for non-production settings. The Advanced editions are available as perpetual licenses, as subscriptions for Cloud Pak for Data deployment, or monthly licenses with premium IBM support included.
Db2 AI Standard and Standard editions
The Db2 Standard editions are designed for businesses demanding high transactional performance for their production-ready, business-critical applications. The Standard editions include all features found in the Db2 Advanced editions, except for Db2 pureScale3 and the Data Partitioning Feature (DPF)3. The Standard editions are subject to capacity restrictions of up to 16 cores and 128 GB of memory per physical or virtual server. Experience high performance, continuous availability, and robust workload management across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.
The Db2 Standard edition pricing is based on a per Virtual Processor Core (VPC) charge metric for both production and non-production environments (like development and testing), while also offering an Authorized User (AU) charge metric exclusively for non-production settings. The Standard editions are available as perpetual licenses, as subscriptions for Cloud Pak for Data deployment, or as monthly licenses with premium IBM support included.
Db2 Starter Edition (For Db2 12.1 through Mod Pack 3)
Db2 Starter Edition is designed for users needing core data management capabilities for new applications and services. To access advanced functionality, customers can seamlessly upgrade to the higher Db2 editions. Db2 Starter Edition is subject to capacity restrictions of up to 4 cores and 16 GB of memory per physical or virtual server. Furthermore, it restricts advanced functionality including High Availability Disaster Recovery (HADR), Native Encryption and Audit Logging, Federation, Backup & Restore (Point-in-time recovery), Db2 pureScale, and Database Partitioning Feature (DPF). Experience robust performance, and workload management across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.

Db2 AI Community and Community editions
The Db2 Community editions are free entry-level database solutions that provide essential capabilities of Db2 for developer and partner communities.
The Db2 Community editions are easy to use and embed, include self-management features, and embody all the core capabilities of Db2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows. The Db2 Community editions are subject to capacity restrictions of up to 4 cores and 8 GB of memory per physical or virtual server. Usage is restricted to non-production environments.
With Db2 AI Community Edition 12.1.4, the basic capabilities that mirror those of the latest Db2 Intelligence Center release are provided free for life through the packaged Genius Hub console. In addition, the premium agentic AI-enabled features of the purchased edition of the Genius Hub are free to try for three months.
The Db2 Community editions can be downloaded from the IBM Db2 website. The Db2 Community editions are refreshed and updated for free at major release milestones, but do not come with enterprise-level support. However, there is a robust online community where you can post questions and learn from peers. Community support is available through the IBM Db2 Community site or with peers on social media.
You can upgrade a Db2 Community edition database to a more scalable edition by applying an activation key to your database image. The database is upgraded immediately, enabling Db2 to use additional virtual processors and instance memory.
Note: The Db2 Community editions are also available as stand-alone Docker images. For more information, see Db2 Community Edition for Docker.
