The Velero Backup and Restore utility

You can use the Velero utility to safely backup and recover Kubernetes (K8s) cluster resources and persistent volumes. This ability allows you to recreate the resources of a Db2 deployment on your OpenShift cluster, in the event of a disaster.

Solution overview

Velero is a popular open-source utility for backing up and restoring K8s resources that provides flexibility for many platforms and storage types. It offers a simple command-line interface that can be customized to meet specific backup and restore requirements. It can be used to back up specific namespaces, resources, or volumes, and can be configured to exclude certain resources or data across multiple cloud providers.

The benefit of using the Velero cluster utility

Unlike Velero, the native Db2 on OpenShift backup and restore methods do not offer protection against cluster-level disaster incidents, such as the accidental deletion of a deployment or other cluster resource. Velero offers the ability to recreate the resources of a Db2u deployment on the cluster in the event of such a disaster.
