The workflow for designing and deploying a virtual cube

A virtual cube is designed in the Design Studio. After a virtual cube is created, it can be deployed to cube servers in the Administration Console. The workflow for designing and deploying a virtual cube is described in the following steps.
  1. Create a virtual cube in the Design Studio.
  2. Design the virtual cube.
  3. Deploy a virtual cube to a cube server in one of the following two ways.
    Option Description
Export the definition of the virtual cube to an XML file in the Design Studio, then import the XML file into the repository in the Administration Console. This is the recommended way to deploy a virtual cube.
    1. In the Data Project Explorer of the Design Studio, export the virtual cube into an XML file. The definitions of the two dependent cubes will be automatically exported into this XML file. For more details, see Exporting OLAP metadata by using the Design Studio.
    2. In the Administration Console, import the XML file. For more details, see Importing OLAP metadata
    3. Add the two dependent cubes to a cube server, then add the virtual cube to the same cube server. For more details, refer to Adding cubes to a cube server in a single step.
Deploy the virtual cube to the target database in the Data Project Explorer of the Design Studio, then deploy these cubes to a cube server in the Administration Console.
    1. In the Data Project Explorer of the Design Studio, deploy the created virtual cube to the target database. The two dependent cubes are automatically deployed to the database.
    2. In the Administration Console, create a connection for the target database, if the connection does not exist.
    3. Add the two dependent cubes to a cube server, then add the virtual cube to the same cube server.
  4. Start, stop or restart a virtual cube. For more details, see Starting, stopping, or restarting a cube.
