Updating Db2 Analytics Accelerator on Z

Follow the steps in this section to upgrade Db2 Analytics Accelerator on Z. This procedure is valid for updates of product version 7.5.14, as well as for upgrades to Db2 Analytics Accelerator on Z 8.1 (migrations).

Before you begin

Before the update, bring the entire system to a halt. That is, cancel all running tasks, such as load jobs and so on, and stop the accelerator.

If incremental updates are enabled, also stop replication before you proceed. Otherwise, the replicated tables end up in a state that requires a manual re-enablement, and, possibly also a reload.

Attention:
  • You must complete the following steps for each Db2 subsystem or data sharing group that is connected to the accelerator.
  • Make sure that no one changes the hardware configuration (which includes the memory that is assigned to an LPAR) while you are completing the steps in this topic. That is, make sure that no one is completing tasks such as reducing the RAM size of the running LPAR or replacing disk drives.

Use the selected administration client to proceed:

  1. Cancel all running tasks.

For more information, see Canceling tasks.

  2. Stop the accelerator.

For more information, see Disabling an accelerator.

  3. Stop replication and wait a few minutes, so that pending incremental updates can be applied to the tables on the accelerator. Your wait time should roughly equal your replication latency period.

    For more information, see:

Attention: Before you proceed, make sure that the existing installation is running well and is in READY state. If you try to update a system that does not work properly, the result cannot be predicted. If you need to repair your system before the update, contact IBM support.

About this task

An upgrade to version 8.1 is different to a regular update because in addition to the updating steps, you must pass an upgrade pre-check and validation before you can upload and activate the new image.

Important: If possible, start a migration to version 8.1 from product maintenance level 7.5.14 or later.

Migrations from earlier 7.5 maintenance levels require the help of IBM support, and are therefore more time-consuming. A remote service session is required because IBM support must manually shut down the accelerator database of each of your accelerators before the migration start. In such a case, contact IBM support by opening a support case.

Procedure

Restriction:
  • For the following steps, you need Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. Other browsers are not supported.
  • If the Login page does not show all the controls needed to login successfully, or if after the logon an SSC installer page is not fully usable because controls are missing, change the browser language to English and try again.

  1. Open the Admin UI in a web browser. Enter the IPv4 address of the Secure Service Container (SSC) LPAR (see Figure 4). If you want to update a multi-node accelerator, enter the IPv4 address of the head node SSC LPAR.
  2. On the Login page, log in with the Master user ID and Master password that you specified as you defined the SSC LPAR. (see Figure 4)
You see the Accelerator Components Health Status page:
Figure 1. The Accelerator Components Health Status window
This image shows the Accelerator Components Health Status page. This page is the first to be displayed after you log in. The Update button is in the middle, on the right-hand side.
  3. On the right side of the Accelerator Components Health Status page, click Update.
    The Update page is displayed.
Important: If you are updating from a version earlier than 7.5.14, the step Run the update pre-check. and the Check button will not be visible on the Update page. In this case, continue with step 5.
    Figure 2. The Update page
    The Update page
  4. Click Check to run the upgrade pre-check. See Figure 3.
Important: Product versions before 7.5.14 do not have an upgrade pre-check. Therefore, you won't see a Check button. Continue with step 5 in this case.
The upgrade pre-check does not change or do anything to a running accelerator. Should the upgrade pre-check report errors or warnings, you can go ahead and fix these issues, and then complete the upgrade at a later time. The accelerator continues to work in the meantime.
Figure 3. The pre-upgrade Check button on theUpdate page
Pre-upgrade Check button in the Update page
The pre-upgrade check gives you one of the following results:
    Success
A successful pre-check results in the following message:
    Figure 4. Pre-check success message
    Pre-check success message

If you see the success message, you can continue with step 5.

    Error messages or warnings
A message window lists errors or warnings that occurred during the pre-check. For example:
Figure 5. Pre-check errors or warnings
    Pre-check errors or warnings
Note: Some of the errors or warnings in Figure 5 can be reported multiple times.
    • To upgrade to a newer version of IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS Version 7.5, such as 7.5.14 or later, you can ignore these messages and continue with step 5.
    • If, however, you want to upgrade to IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS Version 8.1 or later, you must first fix the reported issues before you continue.
Attention: If you do not fix the reported issues, your current accelerator installation might break. In this case, you have to re-install it from scratch.
  5. To make sure that all accelerator operations are paused during the update, click Quiesce. See Figure 6.
    Figure 6. The Update page
This image shows the Update page. The Quiesce button is encircled.
Quiescing the accelerator might take between 5 and 20 minutes. During that time, you might be logged out of the Admin UI due to a session timeout.
    • If no logout occurred, you see the following page when the quiescing process has finished:
Figure 7. Message that is displayed if the accelerator has quiesced successfully.
A message with a green background is displayed on top of the page if the accelerator quiesced successfully.
    • If a logout did occur, you do not see such a message after logging in again. However, you can continue safely with the upgrade if the Accelerator status in the top right corner shows the value quiesced. See
Figure 8. Update page that displayed if you log in again after having been logged out by a timeout.
Update window that displayed if you log in again after having been logged out by a timeout.
      Notes:
      • A quiesced state does not exist in product versions before 7.5.14. That means that the Quiesce button won't be grayed out after a logout.
      • The missing success message is of no concern. You can continue with the upgrade by downloading the export file.
  6. By clicking Download, you can save your current configuration to a local drive, so that it can be reloaded to complete the update. After the download, the Reboot button becomes active (clickable).
    Important:

An export file is an encrypted file that not only contains the accelerator configuration (similar to the JSON configuration file), but also the keys required to access the data pools on the accelerator. All data on the accelerator disks is encrypted. The keys are only stored on the boot volume and in the export files you create. Without the keys, you cannot restore the accelerator data. Securely store all export files and refresh these files after every update and every configuration change. This way, you might be able to restore an accelerator without data loss even if you are facing a severe problem.

If, after saving an export file from Db2 Analytics Accelerator on Z Version 7.5.5 or earlier, your accelerator does not restart properly, contact IBM support.

  7. Click Reboot.
    A confirmation window is displayed:

  19. Click Finalize an Update.
You revisit the Update page that is shown in step 5.
  20. Click Upload and select the encrypted configuration file that you exported in step 6.
If your are updating a multi-node accelerator, you see the Multi-Node Credentials window. In this case, complete steps 20.a through 20.c. Otherwise, proceed with step 21.
    1. In the Multi-Node Credentials window, enter the IP addresses of the accelerator's data-node LPARs. Also provide the user ID and the password of each accelerator (SSC) LPAR, as defined by the HMC. This is required during the initial installation or during an upgrade of the accelerator.
The HMC credentials are needed to deploy the images on the LPARs. When an initial installation or upgrade has been completed, the HMC credentials are no longer required. The HMC credentials are not stored or otherwise saved by the accelerator. Therefore, a change of the user IDs or passwords on the HMC has no impact on running accelerators.
      See Figure 1.

The Multiple Node Deployment Credentials window, which opens after you click Node Credentials.
    2. Click Validate.
Check the validation results. The Valid column on the very right of the window must show green dots for each node. Here is an example of a successful validation:
Figure 18. The Multiple Node Deployment Credentials window after a successful validation
The window shows green icons indicating that the validation has been successful. It also shows an Apply button instead of the Validate button.
    3. If the credentials of all data nodes are valid (indicated by green icons), you can click Apply.
A Status window is displayed, which indicates the progress:
