Received an IWNR2734E error

This condition occurs when using Global Mirror or Metro Mirror session with SAN Volume Controller or Storwize® storage systems.

Problem

When you are trying to issue a Start H2->H1 command to a Global Mirror or Metro Mirror session, you get the following error:

IWNR2734E:  A create pair or start pair failed for copy set 
[copy_set_id] with source [source] and target [target] in session 
[session_name] because it is not possible to create or start a new pair 
when the production role is [role].

This error indicates that the session was suspended and recovered while there were inconsistent pairs outside of the storage session consistency group. These inconsistent pairs were deleted during the Recover command and put into the Defined state. The inconsistent pairs cannot be replicated with the rest of the session while it is running H2->H1.

Action

Issue the Start H2->H1 command. Any pairs that are still in the storage session consistency group are replicated.
