Backups automatically roll off the hardware despite expanding backup capacity

Even if you expand the backup capacity, you might still see backups automatically roll off the hardware.

Problem

This situation can occur when a backup is blocking expansion of the backup capacity for one or more volumes. Due to the way backups are managed on the hardware, there are times when the backup capacity cannot be expanded until other backups are removed.

Action

If one or more backups are blocking expansion of the backup capacity, you can take one of the following actions:
  • (Option 1): Wait until the backup naturally rolls off the hardware, or is expired by the retention period.
  • (Option 2): Or, you can expire the backup or backups manually by using the Expire Backup command in the GUI, or the cmdsess command, with the -action expire_backup parameter.
    Notes:
    • If any volume for a given backup ID has that backup marked as blocking, then the entire backup indicates that it is blocking expansion.
    • If a backup is marked as blocking under a given volume, that volume result for that backup indicates expansion is blocked, and displays a blocking message.
