Deployment

The Notification Service can be deployed on any system, including physical devices and Docker Appliance Containers.

When a Notification Service configuration is enabled, notifications are only sent for new operations that occur after that point. When a configuration is disabled, no notifications are sent and they are not queued up for future reference. Any operations that occur after the configuration is disabled do not generate notifications.

A container vault can be configured to generate notifications for specific containers or for all containers in the vault without the need to enable notifications at each container. See managerapi2004.html

Note: This feature is not supported for mirrored vaults, vault proxies, or vaults that are involved in migrating data.

Information on setting up a Kafka cluster is beyond the scope of this document. See the Apache Kafka documentation (http://kafka.apache.org/documentation) for more information.

Pre-requisites

Gather the following information about the Kafka cluster before you configure the Notification Service:

  1. Kafka bootstrap servers
  2. Kafka username and password, if applicable
  3. Does the Kafka cluster use TLS?
  4. Does the cluster have a self-signed TLS certificate? If so, extract the PEM for the Certificate Authority that signed the Kafka Cluster's TLS certificate.
  5. Is this Notification Service configuration for use with IBM Spectrum Discover?
  6. Name of the default Kafka topic to use for this configuration
