Editing a device

You can edit device settings, such as assigning a device to a site.

About this task

Each Device can be assigned an alias name (50 characters max). This application can be configured via the Administration Preferences menu to use this alias name instead of the host name. A free-form Description can also be entered.

The alias name can be used for internal tracking information (capital asset) and will be part of the inventory database in a future release.

Procedure

Select a Site or create a new Site for this device.
Each Device should be assigned to a Site. The site cannot be changed after a device is assigned to a cabinet since cabinets are site-dependent. If a device is to be moved to a new site, it must be removed from a cabinet before the site is changed.

A device can be manually associated with a specific Management Vault when the “manual” configuration option is selected on the Configure Management Vault on Settings > Vaults.

Drive Health Configuration
For Slicestor devices, Warning and Error Notification thresholds for failed drives are set on the Administration Drive Health menu, but may be overridden for a specific device. The Slicestor device green icon will turn yellow at the Warning level (device failed drives equal to or greater than the Warning value) and the corresponding notification will be displayed in the Event Console.
Warning: Individual device threshold overrides are intended to be temporary and should be restored to the default value once the override is no longer required.
If the number of failed drives equals or exceeds the Error level, the device will continue to operate although at reduced capacity until the drives are replaced. Dispersed Storage technology provides for high (but degraded) levels of data availability and reliability, even when a drive has failed. In general, good operational practice would be to replace failed drives within 24 hours.
Note: Devices used in a Concentrated Dispersal configuration have a default Error threshold of 1 and cannot be changed.

For Gateway devices, during periods of device downtime, devices with virtual IP addresses will bounce to other devices in the device's file server pool to ensure high availability of each virtual IP address. System administrators can provide a list of virtual IP addresses.

HA (High Availability) Configuration
Each File Accesser® Device can be assigned a Virtual IP address (VIP) or collection of VIPs (comma separated) to enable High Availability (HA) within the File Server Pool. When all File Accesser devices are configured for HA, any single File Accesser device within a site can be down (planned or unplanned) and allow for continued operation by reassigning the VIP to a properly running File Accesser® Device.
Advanced Configuration Options
Attention: This feature should be used exclusively by IBM technical support. Refer to the IBM Cloud Object Storage Manager Administration Guide for this feature. Improper configurations can lead to unstable system operation, and can result in permanent data loss.

If needed, enter the Advanced System Configuration parameters for this device. Internal configurations are intended to be used only with guidance from technical support.

Tag Association
A Tag, a non-hierarchical keyword or phrase, can be defined and attached to each vault or device to facilitate management. Enter a Tag Name and assign this tag, or an existing tag to this device. Press Update to save. The maximum name length is 50 characters, including special characters.
