Cannot connect remote rich client to Cognos Analytics

When you configure the Controller remote rich client to connect to Cognos Analytics, an error message may appear and the connection fails.

This issue can occur when Windows Defender Firewall is running on the computer on which Cognos Analytics is installed. If the inbound TCP ports aren't configured correctly, the connection fails.

Solution

To prevent this error from occurring again, follow these steps:

  1. On the computer where Cognos Analytics is installed, open the Control Panel, then locate and start Windows Defender Firewall.
  2. Click Advanced settings.
  3. In the left pane, click Inbound Rules.
  4. In the Actions pane, click New Rule.

The New Inbound Rule Wizard appears.

  5. Select Port and then click Next.
  6. Select the TCP and Specific local ports buttons.
  7. In the Specific local ports field, type 9080,9300
Tip: These are the port numbers for Cognos Analytics and Controller respectively.
  8. Select Allow this connection and click Next.
  9. On the Profile page, under When does this rule apply?, select Privateand click Next.
  10. Name the rule and click Finish.
  11. Retest the rich client connection.

The connection should now be successful.
