Managing server groups

A server group is a customized grouping of your system servers in IBM® Sterling Control Center Monitor. You define your server groups in the way that makes sense to you.

For example, you can group servers by processing center or by server type. You can also group all managed servers into one group to monitor all server activity in one monitor window.

Server group definitions are system wide. For example, if you define two server groups, ConnectDir and ConnectEnt, all IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor users in your organization, who have the necessary permissions, can see these server groups.

You can specify server groups in permissions, rules, and SLCs.

Special considerations for dynamically discovered OSA servers

When IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor receives events for the first time from a dynamically discovered OSA server, such as IBM Global High Availability Mailbox, it creates a system-defined server group for that server type named All dynamically discovered server type Servers. The server that posted the events and other dynamically discovered servers of the same type are added to that system-defined server group.

If you have an existing user-defined server group with the same name as the system-defined server group, the servers and server groups in your server group are removed. Then, your server group becomes the system-defined server group for that server type. Rules, DVGs, SLCs, and other objects that referenced your server group are not modified in the system-defined server group, but the objects can behave differently. When the servers and server groups are removed, the following warning messages are written to the web server log file:

[WARNING ] GORCR9999W: None: User-defined server group  named 'All GP Servers' found 
when we need to create a System-defined group by the same name for node type 129. 
That group will be emptied  and converted to a system-defined group.
[WARNING ]  GORCR9999W: None: User-defined server group All GP Servers emptied 
and converted to a system-defined server group.

To avoid naming conflicts with the system-defined server group, do not name any server groups All server type Servers. If you have a user-defined server group that follows the All server type Servers naming convention, create and rename an equivalent server group, change the references of your objects to the new server group, and delete the previous server group.
