Event counter utility

The event counter utility is designed to assist you in completing the event processor worksheets to determine the platform necessary to monitor servers with IBM® Sterling Control Center Monitor.

The event counter utility goes through the following process when counting Sterling Connect:Direct® events:

  • Reads an input file that contains connection information for one or more Sterling Connect:Direct servers
  • Connects to each Sterling Connect:Direct server sequentially
  • Issues a SELECT STATISTICS with the particular record IDs that generate IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor events
  • Calculates and displays the following values:
    • Average number of events per day for all servers
    • Peak number of events in a two-hour time period for all servers
    • Peak number of events in a 24-hour time period for all servers
    • Average number of processes per day for all servers
    • Peak number of processes in a two-hour time period for all servers
    • Peak number of processes in a 24-hour time period for all servers

The record IDs are read from the statRecordIds file in the CC_FILES database. This file contains all of the valid record IDs that generate an IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor event for each platform.

To assist you in planning your IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor implementation, you can run the event counter utility before fully installing IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor. You can use this utility to determine whether your platform is sufficient for the version of IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor you plan to use.

Use the following high-level process in assessing your environment:

  • Run the IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor installation program on any platform supported by IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor, but do not configure IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor when prompted.
  • Run the event counter utility.
  • Enter the values calculated by the utility in the Event processor worksheet.

Hardware sizing of your IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor environment is critical to proper functioning of the software. Clients should size their environment when they are planning for implementation, and at times when your environment changes. To help clients with proper sizing, you can request a Sizing Study from your IBM® Professional Services Project Manager or an IBM Sales Executive. You are going to be provided a Sizing Questionnaire that you complete with details about intended processing volumes in your environment. IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor documentation can help you make decisions and find information for the Questionnaire. If you intend to monitor Sterling Connect:Direct, you can use the Event Counter Utility that is installed with IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor, to help collect some event statistics. If you have questions or issues filling out the Sizing Questionnaire, you can contact your IBM® Professional Services Project Manager or an IBM Sales Executive. After you complete the Questionnaire, return it back to your IBM® Professional Services Project Manager or an IBM Sales Executive for further analysis in the Sizing Study. IBM is going to send back a sizing recommendations document to help you with your planning.

  • If your platform cannot support IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor, install IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor on another platform. If your platform can support IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor, run configCC.sh when you are ready to configure IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor and to complete the installation.
