General database tuning

Review these guidelines before performing general database tuning.

  • Check for known hardware and software problems pertaining to your system.
  • If you have a hard disk drive with a fast response time, then it can improve the overall performance of IBM® Sterling Control Center Monitor.
  • Never tune more than one level of your system at a time.
  • Put tracking and fallback procedures in place before you install and begin to use IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor.
  • Do not share the database instance with other applications.
  • If you use a virus scanner, disable it if it is on the database server. If you cannot disable the virus scanner, at least exclude the database files and directories from the Virus Scanner operation. Also, schedule the scan during off-peak times.
  • To avoid disk contention, use different physical disks for data files and log files.
  • Rebuild indexes periodically. Rebuild these indexes at least every week for the following main tables:
    • EVENTS
    • CD_STATS_LOG
    • CE_STATS_LOG
    • CC_PROCESS
    • CC_PROCESS_DVG
    • CC_FILE_TRANSFER
    • CC_FILE_TRANSFER_DVG
    • AF_STATS_LOG
    • BP_STATS_LOG
    • CD_STATS_LOG
    • CE_STATS_LOG
    • CX_STATS_LOG
    • FG_STATS_LOG
    • MQ_STATS_LOG
    • QF_STATS_LOG
  • Increase the database buffer.
  • Use hardware-based RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) technology.
  • Use database clustering.
  • The CC_PROCESS, CC_PROCESS_DVG, CC_FILE_TRANSFER, and CC_FILE_TRANSFER_DVG tables contain the summarized information for processes and file transfers. Thus, these tables can grow indefinitely. You can automatically purge the summarized process and file transfer data in these tables in the database to keep the database performance at an acceptable level.

    The initial purge of summary data can impact IBM Control Center Monitor performance when many database rows need to be removed. By reducing the amount of data that is retained in steps, you can decrease any impact on performance.

    To purge data from the CC_PROCESS, CC_PROCESS_DVG, CC_FILE_TRANSFER, and CC_FILE_TRANSFER_DVG tables, from IBM Control Center Monitor web console, click Menu button () > System Settings > Database, and set the time period in which you want data to be retained in Purge summary data older than (days). By default, 0 is set, which means the system does not purge summary data. For more information about database settings, see Database settings.
