Content Cortex component relationships

The Content Cortex components are interdependent. Although most components do not require other components be running in order to start successfully, the absence of other components can affect processing.

As a general rule, start the components and related servers in the following order (reverse the order for shutdown):

  • Directory services
  • Database servers
  • Content Platform Engine servers
  • IBM® Content Search Services servers
  • Rules Listener
  • IBM Content Navigator
  • Other Content Cortex components
The following table describes the relationships between components. Use this information to determine the optimal order for starting and stopping each component in your Content Cortex system. In addition, use this information to determine the impact of stopping a single component for maintenance or other purposes.

Content Platform Engine

Directory service

Databases

Without Content Federation Services for Image Services, other storage device, or network or other file store:

  • Content Platform Engine cannot retrieve associated content.

Without IBM Content Search Services:

  • Content Platform Engine full-text searches fail with errors.

  • Content Platform Engine cannot complete indexing jobs.

Without an SMTP mail server:

  • Content Platform Engine cannot notify users by email when specified process-related events occur.

Without a Rules Listener process on a rules server:
  • Content Platform Engine cannot process rules-based workflows.

All components work with Content Platform Engine.

IBM Content Search Services

None

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • IBM Content Search Services cannot add new content for indexing.

  • IBM Content Search Services cannot retrieve content that has been indexed.

Without IBM Content Search Services:

  • Content Platform Engine cannot index new content.

  • Client applications cannot search on content that has been indexed for content-based retrieval.

IBM Content Navigator

Database

Without Content Platform Engine:

  • Users cannot log in to IBM Content Navigator.

  • IBM Content Navigator users cannot access object stores.

  • IBM Content Navigator cannot populate IBM Content Navigator Work View pages.

  • IBM Content Navigator users cannot use workflow-related applications.

  • IBM Content Navigator users cannot launch workflows.
