Setting performance parameters

The performance parameters maximize performance by controlling workstation access to the server and balancing the optimization of workstation and server performance.

About this task

The default setting for the maximum operations parameter is 100. The default value for the maximum instructions parameter is 200. For most workflow systems, the default settings are sufficient. You should adjust the settings only if directed by your service representative, under the following conditions:

  • Workflow maps executing in the isolated region contain 750 - 1000 system instructions between user-defined instructions. To maximize the availability of the Instruction Sheet Interpreter (ISI) and other server resources in this situation, decrease the value of the maximum instructions parameter.

    Conversely, if the ISI system queue is filling up, increase the value of the maximum instructions parameter. You can access the InstructionSheetInterpreter system queue through vwtool, APIs, or Process Administrator.

  • The size of the database audit trail is exceeded, preventing further database activity. To alleviate this problem, decrease the value in the maximum database operations parameter, or see the appropriate vendor documentation for information on optimizing or increasing the amount of space available for the database audit trail.
  • The amount of time between one step processor dispatching a work item and the next step processor finding and locking that work item is excessive. Decreasing both parameter values can alleviate this situation.

Procedure

To set performance parameters:

  1. Select the isolated region you want to modify and click Properties on the toolbar.
  2. Select the Region Configuration tab.
  3. In the Maximum operations per transaction field, indicate the maximum number of database operations per transaction. You can enter a number manually or choose from the list. The default setting is 100.
  4. In the Maximum instructions per transaction field, indicate the maximum number of instructions per transaction. You can enter a number manually or choose from the list. The default setting is 200.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Commit Changes on the toolbar to apply this change to your isolated region.
