Creating or updating a configuration profile for upgrade

To upgrade Content Platform Engine or Content Engine you must use Configuration Manager to create an upgrade configuration profile. The profile contains deployment, authentication, and database-connection information.

Before you begin

Be sure that you have available the Installation and Upgrade Worksheet that was completed during your planning activities.

Remember: Make a backup of your configuration profiles before you update the profile for an upgrade. The upgrade profile operation updates the files in your profile for the new target version.

About this task

The version of the configuration profile that you use must match the version of theConfiguration Manager tool. Because of this requirement, you must upgrade your configuration profile before you run the upgrade.
The profile name is used for the directory name and for the configuration profile file name. When you create a profile, make sure that the profile name is a valid directory name for your operating system and does not contain:
  • Special characters like /,\,:,*,?,",<>,;,\0,| for Windows and Linux® platforms.
  • Reserved names like CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM0, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, COM¹, COM², COM³, LPT0, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, LPT9, LPT¹, LPT², LPT³, CLOCK$, MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS, CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT , CONOUT, CONOUT$, PRINTER, MAILSLOT that are not supported as directory names in Windows.

Procedure

  1. Open your completed Installation and Upgrade Worksheet file.
Tip: In the worksheet file, verify that the Data > Filter > AutoFilter command is enabled. To view only Configuration Manager values, filter by CM: Upgrade Configuration Profile in the Installation or Configuration Program column.
  2. In Configuration Manager, start the Create Upgrade Configuration Profile wizard by using one of the following methods:
    • Select File > Upgrade Profile.
    • Click the Create a profile for an upgrade installation icon in the toolbar.
  3. Complete the configuration screens by referring to the values in your worksheet.
The wizard screens that are displayed depend on whether an existing Servers.xml file was found in the ce_install_path\ContentEngine directory, where ce_install_path is the location where Content Platform Engine or Content Engine is installed.
    Option Description
Servers.xml contains 1 server The upgrade wizard reads the server information from the Servers.xml file. If the Servers.xml file does not contain information on the deployment type, you must select a deployment type.
Servers.xml contains more than 1 server The upgrade wizard reads the server information from the Servers.xml file. You must select a single server to upgrade from the list of servers that was found in Servers.xml. If the Servers.xml file does not contain information on the deployment type, you must select a deployment type.
Servers.xml was not found If the Servers.xml file cannot be found, your upgrade process more closely resembles an upgrade to a new instance. The upgrade wizard cannot determine any information about your existing server. You must name the profile, provide a location for the profile, and provide the application server properties.

See Configuring Content Platform Engine into a new application server instance with a new profile for details.

If you want to use the settings in your configuration profile for the upgrade, you can recreate the Servers.xml file before you run the Create Upgrade Configuration Profile wizard. For instructions, see Re-creating the Servers.xml file.

The upgrade profile is displayed as an icon in the left pane with icons for the tasks that are required for your upgrade path.
