Creating an advanced storage area

An advanced storage area connects to one or more advanced storage devices to provide high availability content storage and disaster recovery for an object store.

Before you begin

Configure all the advanced storage devices for an advanced storage area before you create the advanced storage area. You can delete advanced storage devices from the advanced storage area, but you cannot add advanced storage devices after the advanced storage area is created.

When you create an advanced storage area, you can specify the deletion method, but the actual behavior depends on the storage device type. For S3 and Azure advanced storage devices, only the Clear deletion method is supported. For file system advanced storage devices, the deletion behavior is the same as that of a standard file system storage area.

  • Clear:

Directly deletes the content file. However, the content of the deleted file might be recoverable by a file system utility such as Norton Utilities. The content is recoverable when other files have not overwritten the disk space that is occupied by the deleted file.

  • Destroy:

Overwrites document content with zeros before deletion. Provides the deletion level that is recommended for clearing and sanitizing media that is less than top-secret.

  • Purge:

Overwrites file content three times before deleting the document. Provides the highest level of deletion that is recommended for purging top-secret documents.

Note:

Destructive and Purge deletion carry signification performance cost and require complex file system locking operations, you should only use these 2 deletion methods when it is truly necessary.

Procedure

To create an advanced storage area:

  1. Start the New Advanced Storage Area wizard in the administration console:
    1. In the tree view, click the Object Store > object store name to open the object store.
    2. In the object store tree view, right-click the Administrative > Storage > Advanced Storage > Advanced Storage Areas folder and click New Advanced Storage Area.
  2. Enter the name and description for the new advanced storage area in Name and Describe the Advanced Storage Area page. Click Next.
  3. In the Configure the Advanced Storage Area page, specify the properties of the advanced storage area. Click Next.
You can specify the Maximum number of elements, Maximum size, Encryption Method and Standby activation priority.
Note: The default Encryption Method is AES Counter Mode with 256-bit key. For earlier versions, the default is AES Counter Mode with 128-bit key.
  4. In the Associate a Storage Device page, you can manage how content can be replicated to other replication devices. Click Next after you select the devices.
  5. In the Advanced Storage Area Parameters page, specify the content parameters for the advanced storage area like Content ID batch size,Content ID batch TTL, Open time limit and click Next.
  6. Select the Storage Policies and click Next.
  7. Click Finish after reviewing the Summary page.

Results

If it is created successfully, the newly created advanced storage area appears in the tree view under Object Store > object store name > Storage > Advanced Storage Areas on the left pane.
