IBM® Concert provides resilience capabilities to help you assess application deployment resilience, evaluate operational risk, generate resilience scores, and improve system reliability across your application landscape.

What is resilience?

Every minute of downtime has a cost. Service disruptions can affect customer experiences, interrupt business operations, increase operational costs, and potentially result in lost revenue. As applications become increasingly complex, understanding how well they can withstand failures and recover from disruptions becomes critical.

Resilience is the ability of an application deployment to continue operating during disruptions, recover efficiently when failures occur, and maintain expected service levels over time.

Concert helps you measure and improve resilience by evaluating application deployments against defined requirements, identifying operational risks, generating resilience scores, and recommending actions to address resilience gaps.

Why resilience matters to your applications

Organizations often struggle to understand whether their application deployments can continue operating reliably when faced with failures, infrastructure issues, configuration drift, or changing business demands. Without a consistent way to measure resilience, it can be difficult to identify risks, prioritize improvements, and understand which issues require attention.

The Resilience dimension helps you evaluate how prepared your application deployments are to withstand disruptions, recover from failures, and maintain reliable service delivery.

How resilience works in Concert

Concert helps you assess resilience through a structured process that defines what is measured, how it is evaluated, and how assessment results are used to identify resilience gaps and improvement opportunities:
  • Review or select a resilience library (default or custom)
  • Select relevant requirements from the chosen library
  • Create a resilience profile to define goals and scoring
  • Assign the profile through a posture plan
  • Run assessments using available metric data
  • Review resilience scores, risk levels, and posture insights
  • Review and act on resilience recommendations in the Action center
To support this process, the Resilience dimension provides the following capabilities:
  • Resilience libraries provide predefined requirements, metrics, scoring logic, and evaluation criteria organized by category.
  • Resilience profiles define target scores, thresholds, weights, indicator types, and scoring logic.
  • Posture management applies resilience profiles to application deployments and supports ongoing posture evaluation.
  • Resilience scoring and risk insights help identify operational risks and resilience gaps.
  • Resilience actions provide recommendations to address resilience gaps and improve application stability.
  • Import resilience data using Concert Workflows automate the ingestion of resilience metrics used during assessments.

Resilience categories

Resilience is not measured by a single factor. Applications must remain available, recover from failures, scale with demand, and operate securely to support business and operational objectives. To help you evaluate these vital aspects of resilience, Concert organizes requirements into the following categories:
  • Availability helps reduce downtime by evaluating whether applications remain operational and accessible.
  • Maintainability supports long-term application health by assessing how easily systems can be updated and improved.
  • Observability improves troubleshooting by providing visibility into application behavior through metrics, logs, and traces.
  • Recoverability focuses on restoring services quickly after failures to minimize business disruption.
  • Scalability determines whether applications can support growing workloads while maintaining performance.
  • Usability examines how effectively users can interact with applications and complete tasks.
  • Integrity helps ensure that configurations, deployments, and operational data remain consistent and reliable.
  • Security focuses on protecting applications and data from unauthorized access and other security risks.

Resilience scoring and assessment insights

After an assessment is completed, you can see how your application deployment is performing against defined resilience objectives and identify areas that require attention. To provide this visibility, Concert evaluates each requirement using associated metrics and generates scores on a standardized 0–100 scale. These results help you identify resilience gaps, evaluate risk, and prioritize improvements that strengthen overall resilience posture. Assessment results are available at multiple levels and are aggregated to produce:
  • Requirement-level scores
  • Category-level scores
  • An overall resilience score for the application deployment

Together, resilience scores, risk insights, and recommended actions help you understand where your application deployments are most vulnerable and what improvements will have the greatest impact. By addressing these gaps, you can strengthen application reliability, reduce the likelihood of service disruptions, improve recovery readiness, and better support business continuity and customer expectations.
