Glossary
This glossary provides terms and definitions for IBM Common Licensing software and products.
The following cross-references are used in this glossary:
- See refers you from a nonpreferred term to the preferred term or from an abbreviation to the spelled-out form.
- See also refers you to a related or contrasting term.
For other terms and definitions, see the IBM Terminology website (opens in new window).
D
daemon
Background processes that run on the license server. The daemons administer the check-in
and check-out of licenses for each feature of each application that uses FlexNet.
demo license
A node-locked license that works on any computer. A demo license is typically valid for a
maximum of 30 days for evaluation or diagnostic purposes.
F
floating license
A floating license system allows users on a network to check out individual license from a
shared set of licenses. Floating license keys contain the hostname and host ID of the IBM License Key Server. the license manager daemon
and vendor daemon must run on the license server specified by the hostnamename and host ID in the
license key. When a user exits an application, all licenses used during that session are returned to
the pool of available licenses.
H
host ID
A number that uniquely identifies a computer. The host ID is obtained from different
sources within a computer, depending on the operating system.
host name
The name assigned to the computer by the system administrator. The host can contain
characters and numbers. For example:
Watson or ibm200L
license
A legal agreement that authorizes the use of proprietary information including, but not
limited to, copyrighted or patented information.
license agreement
See license.
license file
A text file named license.dat. The file includes the following information:
- Server names and host IDs
- Vendor names and paths to vendor daemon
- Features and package information
license key
An authorization that regulates the use of software licensed programs. Software license
keys must be installed on the computer when software is upgraded or moved, the hardware processor
group is changed, additional license usage is added, or new software that requires license keys is
purchased. Each
FEATURE/INCREMENT line in the license file is a license key for a
feature or a package. A license key specifies the number of licenses that are available for a
feature or package. The license key is based on data that is specific to IBM Rational.license manager daemon: lmgrd
The
lmgrd daemon handles the initial contact with the client application
program and then passes the connection to the vendor daemon. This daemon also starts and restarts
the vendor daemon.license model
A licensing model consists of an application that needs a license, and a license file that
contains the license information.
license options file
Administrators use the license options file to control the operating parameters of
FlexNet licensing. Users are identified by their
username , host name, display, IP address, or PROJECT.
license server
The computer on which the license manager daemon and the vendor daemon run. Users with
node-locked licenses do not require a license server.
N
node-locked license
A node-locked license key is for use on one computer and is tied to that computer. You do
not need to run a license server if you are using a node-locked license.
P
permanent license key
A license key that IBM issues
when clients purchase an application that requires such a key.
product activation kit
A permanent license for a product and the application for installing the
license.
T
token-based licensing
The token based license model means that you can buy a certain number of Token licenses.
If you use a Rational® tool that checks out a
FEATURE that is token-based, the FEATURE line in the license file specifies the number of Tokens
that are checked out. Token-based licenses can only be used with floating licenses. They cannot be
used for node-locked licenses. For more details about Token-based licensing, contact your local
IBM marketing representative.
trial license
A license key that provides clients access to an application for a specified time for
product evaluation purposes.
V
vendor daemon: rational or telelogic
A process that permits and tracks the number of licenses that are used. Each application
that uses FlexNet has its own vendor daemon. The
rational and telelogic daemons communicate through TCP/IP. As the
format of the traffic is independent of the computer, the license server and the computer running
the IBM
Rational application that connects to the
IBM
Rational License Server can be on different
platforms and operating systems.
