Embedding a report in Microsoft Teams

You can add a tab in Microsoft Teams that displays a report from your Cognos Analytics environment to other Teams users. To achieve this, you upload a Cognos® Analytics app to Microsoft Teams. This allows you to connect to an external Cognos Analytics server from within Teams.

Note: You can run your Teams application on any platform: Windows, Macintosh, or the Web.

Before you begin

Ensure that these requirements are met:

  • Cognos Analytics version 11.2.4 or later is configured as follows:
  • You have administrator privileges in your Teams environment.
  • If you are running Teams on Firefox, you may need to turn off the Enhanced Tracking protection option.
Note: You don't need to be a Cognos Analytics administrator. If you can access a report in Cognos Analytics, you can embed a report in Teams.

Procedure

  1. In a browser window, enter the Cognos Analytics URL, appended with msteamsapp/download, as follows:

    https://host_name:port_number/bi/v1/msteamsapp/download

    or

    https://web_server_name:443/virtual_directory/bi/v1/msteamsapp/download

A .zip file, cognosanalyticsmsteams.zip, is downloaded to your computer.

  2. Start Microsoft Teams.
  3. Click Apps, then click Manage your apps.
  4. If you installed a version of cognosanalyticsmsteams.zip prior to release 11.2.4, click Uninstall an app and uninstall the old version of cognosanalyticsmsteams.zip. Before going to the next step, clear the cache in your browser.
  5. Click Upload an app, and then and select Upload a custom app.
  6. Browse to the cognosanalyticsmsteams.zip file that you downloaded in step 1, select it, and then click Open.
  7. Do one of the following to specify where the report tab will appear in Teams:
    • Click Add to a team, then type a team or channel name.

      or

    • Click Add to a chat, then type the name of a person or a chat.
  8. Click Set up tab.
  9. Enter the Cognos Analytics URL, as follows:

    https://host_name:port_number/bi/

    or

    https://web_server_name:443/virtual_directory/bi/

  10. Click Confirm.
  11. Log into Cognos Analytics.
Note: In Teams, in both the Web application and the desktop application, you can log in using your IBM ID. Other OIDC authentication types are not supported.
  12. Browse the Team content folder, select a report, and then click Select.
  13. Click Save to confirm your selection.

The Cognos Analytics report is added as a tab in Microsoft Teams.

Tip: If you'd prefer to view your report in Cognos Analytics, rather than in Microsoft Teams, click Open in Cognos Analytics in the title bar of your report tab. Cognos Analytics is then launched in a new browser window. This allows you to perform other tasks in Cognos Analytics.
