Area

Use an area visualization to emphasize the magnitude of change over time.

Area charts are like line charts, but the areas below the lines are filled with colors or patterns. Stacked charts are useful for comparing proportional contributions in a category. They plot the relative value that each data series contributes to the total. Since an area visualization stacks the results for each column or item, the total of all results is easily seen.

The following image shows an example of an area visualization.

This example of the area visualization shows customer lifetime value by expiry month that is colored for various vehicle classes.
To re-create this area visualization, perform the following steps:
  1. From a dashboard, click the Visualizations icon and in the System tab of the Visualizations pane, select Area.
  2. Click the Select a source button in the Data pane, and in the Select a source window go to Samples/By industry/Insurance/Data. Select the Customer analysis data module and click Add.
  3. Drag the following data sets onto the indicated fields:
    • Expiry Month onto the x-axis field.
    • Vehicle Class onto the Color field.
    • Customer Lifetime Value onto the y-axis field.

The following animation demonstrates the previous steps:
