Running the Model Advisor

Run the Model Advisor to analyze the metadata in a model.

You can run this tool on the following objects:

  • Query subjects, dimensions, hierarchies, calculations, query items, or shortcuts

    Objects that will be displayed on a specific report are analyzed to test the report before it's created.

  • Folders or namespaces

    All objects in a folder or namespace are analyzed. If an object references an object in another folder or namespace, the referenced object is also analyzed.

  • Packages

    The package is analyzed before publishing to ensure that it follows the modeling guidelines.

Procedure

  1. In Project Viewer, select one or more objects to analyze.
  2. Click Tools, Run Model Advisor.
    Tip: You can also right-click one or more objects, and then click Run Model Advisor.
  3. In the Options tab, select the criteria that you want to use in the analysis.
  4. Click Analyze.
  5. In the Model Advisor tab, review the issues that are identified.

    There is a description of each issue, a link to more information about each issue, and a list of objects that are impacted by the issue.

  6. To understand whether there is a problem with an object, click the Context explorer icon context explorer icon in the Action column of the report.

    The Context Explorer shows the objects that the selected object is connected to. You can selected a related object and see which objects it is connected to.
