Upgrading IBM Cloud Pak foundational services

IBM Cloud Pak foundational services upgrade consists of an OpenShift cluster where one or more foundational services operators and instances of foundational services are upgraded from a prior release.

Supported upgrade paths

You can upgrade only the following supported paths:

Table 1. Upgrade paths
Upgrade from Upgrade to Description
Version 4.6.0 or later 4.19.0 and later If your current version is 4.5.x or earlier, first upgrade to a version at or between 4.6.0 to 4.18.1. Then, you can upgrade to 4.19.0 or later.
Version 4.x or later Continuous delivery version 4.x to 4.18.1 Create new CatalogSource, and update channel and CatalogSource for operator's subscription
Version 3.x or later Continuous delivery version 4.x to 4.18.1 Migrate from foundational services version 3.x.x to version 4.x.x

During the upgrade process, you cannot access the services management console.

Before you begin

Identity Management (IM) and Zen services are configured with the embedded PostgreSQL database as default.

If you need to configure IM with the external PostgreSQL database, see Configuring an external EDB PostgreSQL database for IM. You cannot migrate data from embedded PostgreSQL to external EDB PostgreSQL after you install or upgrade the foundational services.

Upgrade steps

Complete the following steps to upgrade IBM Cloud Pak foundational services.

  1. Mirror the images If your cluster is in a restricted (air-gapped) network environment, first mirror the images. For a complete procedure, see Mirroring images for an air-gapped cluster.

  2. Add the catalog sources To make the operators available to your cluster, add catalog sources to your cluster. For a complete procedure, see Adding catalog sources to a cluster.

  3. Upgrading foundational services You can upgrade foundational services that were installed in a prior release. For a complete procedure, see Upgrading foundational operators and services.
