Enabling monitoring capabilities

After you install the Monitoring (ibm-management-monitoring) operator through Installing the IBM Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management, you need to do extra configuration and installation steps to enable full monitoring capabilities.

Step 1 - Prerequisite check of your cluster

Check whether you have the IBM Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management Hub cluster available. If yes, go to Step 2 - Install Monitoring DataProvider Management. If not, go to Step 3 - Manually install Kubernetes data collector and Unified Agent.

Step 2 - Install IBM Monitoring DataProvider Management

See Installation of Monitoring DataProvider Management.

Step 3 - Manually install the Kubernetes data collector and Unified Agent

In some circumstances, you must install the Kubernetes data collector and Unified Agent manually, for example, you do not have a IBM Cloud Pak for Multicloud Management Hub cluster. For manual steps, see Kubernetes data collector and manual installation of Unified Agent.

Step 4 - Deploy agents and data collectors

After you deploy the Unified Agent, you can then enable more plug-ins for Unified Agent to add monitoring capabilities, see Enabling and configuring plug-ins for Unified Agent. For other agents and data collectors, you still need manual steps to install and configure. For more information, see Deploying agents, data collectors, and plug-ins.
