Set up quotas and alerts
Cloud Pak for Data includes several features that you can use to help prevent problems before they occur. It is strongly recommended that you enable these features to support routine monitoring.
- Who should perform this task?
- A Cloud Pak for Data administrator with one of the
following permissions must perform this task:
- Administer platform
- Manage platform health
- How frequently should you perform this task?
-
You should set up quotas and alerts after you install Cloud Pak for Data.
In addition, it is recommended that you review these settings every few weeks to determine whether you need to adjust the settings based on your actual use.
- Set quotas on the
platform, on services, and on projects
A quota is a way for you to specify the maximum amount of memory and vCPU you want the platform, a specific service, or a project to use. A quota is a target against which you can measure your actual memory and vCPU use. A quota acts as a benchmark to let you know when your vCPU or memory use is approaching or surpassing your target use.
If you install the scheduling service, you can optionally enforce the quotas so that new pods cannot be created if the pods would push your use above your quota.
- Optional: Adjust the
alerting rules.
An alert is an event that indicates an issue or potential issue. The platform has a predefined set of alerting rules, but you can adjust the rules if needed.
- Automatically forward alerts to Slack, an SNMP
server, or to specific email accounts.
Make sure that your Cloud Pak for Data administrators are notified when issues occur, even if they aren't using the Cloud Pak for Data web client.
