Advanced upgrade from versions 1.0.x
If your Cloud Pak for Data System is on version 1.0.x,
IBM Support will assist you in the process of upgrading to 2.0.x.
System prerequisites
The system must first be upgraded to 1.0.7.6 if it is on lower versions.
The upgrade process
Cloud Pak for Data System version 2.0 is based on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.6.32. In the upgrade process, the firmware and the operating system is upgraded, and Portworx is replaced by OpenShift Data Foundation (formerly known as OpenShift Container Storage) 4.6.5 to provide storage on the system. Cloud Pak for Data and Netezza Performance Server are also upgraded. Because the upgrade process is complex, it must be supervised by the IBM Support team, who will run and monitor the process remotely. System downtime is required - the length of the maintenance window will be determined by Support. Open a support ticket if you are planning to upgrade your 1.x system.System backup
A key part of the upgrade process is making sure that the system and customer data is backed up and restored. During the upgrade, the backup directory is defined on system nodes, and your system and application data is backed up. The space required for backups on the system storage will be determined by IBM Support. After the upgrade, the dedicated backup storage nodes are returned to the cluster and ready for use.
Upgrade stages
The upgrade process is automated. It is divided into a sequence of stages. The stages are units
of the upgrade process that can be started, restarted, or skipped. Each stage includes one or more
actions that are focused on a particular area, such as:
- Prepare the system for the advanced upgrade.
- Prepare backup storage.
- Back up system data for all components.
- Prepare the system for platform upgrade to 2.0.
- Upgrade the platform software to 2.0.
- Prepare for OpenShift Container Platform setup.
- Set up the OpenShift Container Platform cluster.
- Prepare for Cloud Pak for Data upgrade.
- Restore Cloud Pak for Data data (this step is required before upgrading Cloud Pak for Data).
- Upgrade Cloud Pak for Data
- Restore system data for all other components except network, and Call Home (which must be restored when Platform Manager is running).
- Restore system data for network.
- Finish system upgrade:
- Start Platform Manager
- Restore the Call Home component
- If required, upgrade NPS.
