Connecting to single or multiple devices

The TL1 Probe is a multi-headed probe that can connect to either a single device or multiple devices.

When the probe connects to a single device, it uses the details specified by the following properties to make a connection:

  • ChatinString
  • ChatoutString
  • HeartbeatInterval
  • HeartbeatResponse
  • HeartbeatString
  • HeartbeatTimeout
  • Host
  • Port
  • ResynchCommand
  • ResynchInterval
  • Tid
  • WakeupAttempts
  • WakeupInterval
  • WakeupString

When the probe connects to multiple devices, it references the hosts file specified by the HostsFile property. The hosts file contains the same details as those required for the single connection, but in a different format. For details about this format, see Specifying devices using a hosts file.

If you are using multiple hosts or ports, the probe rotates among the connections, processing one event from each. If the probe experiences a read timeout when doing its first read of any connection in each iteration, it moves directly to the next connection.

The limit to the number of devices to which the probe can connect is determined by the capability of your network and the capability of the host on which you are running the probe. If the processing of your system becomes overloaded when running a probe that monitors multiple TL1 devices, or if there is an appreciable delay between the receipt of a response message and it being sent to the ObjectServer, use more than one probe to monitor your TL1 devices.
