Resource management: Searching and filtering
You can search for applications, resource groups, and resources using the Search function. You can further filter the search results by defining filter conditions, which can be saved for future use. For instance, you can define filter conditions to display resources that have a specific tag applied to them, or for RBAC
After you log into IBM Cloud Pak for AIOps console, you open the Resource management page from the main navigation menu.
Lists of applications, resource groups and resources are displayed on separate tabs. If many resources are listed, you can use the 'search' or 'filter' functions to identify specific ones, which you can then manage using the tools provided, or display as topologies for further analysis.
Remember: Beginning with IBM Cloud Pak for AIOps version 4.8.0, you can configure the UI to label your groups-of-groups collection of resources as either 'applications' or 'services'. For more information, see the following tip on changing terminology.
Tip: You can now also access the search and filter functionality from the new Resource map (for resources only).
To find aplications, resource groups and resources
-
Activate the Search field.
As you insert your cursor into the Search field, the five most recent searches are listed, and can be selected.
- You can delete a recent search by clicking the delete button (X) next to the suggested search, or by clicking View all to display all recent searches.
- When viewing all recent searches, you can filter the results further using the Filter table Search field, or you can select them and then delete them from the recent searches list.
-
Enter data into Search.
As you type in a search term, suggested search results are listed, both from the topology database and from recent searches, with your entered text highlighted.
Tip: You can perform more complex searches, such as searching with multiple search terms. For more information about advanced query syntax, see the topology query reference topic.
-
Select a Search result.
When you click a search result, the results are listed on the Results page under the Favorites and All results sections, separated into Applications, Resource groups, and Resources tabs, and search is closed with the search term displayed in the Search field.
Note: (For resources only), you can select the Include deleted resources toggle in order to include deleted resources on the Results page (unless an administrator has disabled that feature). Deleted resources are marked as such, and the date and time that they were deleted is displayed. If you click the resource name, the deleted resource is displayed as a topology with the history timeline open, and set to 1ms before deletion.
- For each search result, the name, type and other properties are displayed.
- If a status other than
clear
exists for a search result, the maximum severity is displayed, and a color-coded information bar above each result displays all non-clear statuses (in proportion). - To render a topology view from a search result, click the name.
Note: You can click the delete button (X) next to the search term to return to the previous Resource management screen.
-
You can further reduce the number of search results by defining (or using predefined) filters.
To filter applications, resource groups and resources
If filtering from the Resource management page, the Services and Resource group tabs are unavailable (grayed out). Once you have identified a resource you wish to view on a map (defined earlier), click the map icon for that resource in the table (to the right of the 'More details' link).
To see a resticted access filter do the following:
-
Click Resouce Managment.
-
Click the Resources tab, and then the filter icon in the top left-hand corner.
-
Set the filter as you need, for example you can set the severity section to major, and business criticality to Auto-medium-criticality.
-
Then click the three dots icon in the top right-hand corner of the Filter conditions section. 5. Click Save as new filter.
Note: Alternatively, if you are an administrator who has manage profiles priviledges enabled, you can set Role Based Access Control (RBAC) functionality that allows you see and click the Save as new restriction filter option, thus applying certain restriction filters to applications, resource groups and resources.

If filtering from a Resource map, filters are applied immediately and the map is adjusted.
-
Filter applications, resource groups and resources.
If many applications, resource groups or resources are displayed, you can filter them using predefined filters, or by defining new filters. You can save filters for your future use, or for use by specified users types.
-
To use an existing filter, click Select a filter to the left of the Search field to select any previously defined filters to which you have access. If you select a filter, the list of displayed applications, resource groups or resources is updated.
-
To define a new filter, click Open filter to the left of the Select a filter drop-down to open the Filter conditions panel. From here, you can define the following filters:
-
Severity: Select one or more severity as a filter condition.
-
Business criticality: Select a business criticality as a filter condition. Business criticality can be customized by an administrator.
-
Other properties: You can set more complex filter condition by clicking Add condition. See To use properties to define filters for more details.
-
For resources only:
-
Using Last updated, you can choose to display only the resources that were created or changed during a specific time period (prior to 'now'). Note that changes in severity or status in this time period are not flagged. Choose either minutes, hours, or days, and select a number between 1 (one) and 500.
-
Using Geospatial, you can filter resources that have been enriched with a geographical location. See To define a geospatial filter for more details.

To save a filter for future use, complete the following steps:
a. After you have defined the conditions for a new filter, click Save as new filter on the overflow menu.
b. Define a Filter name and Description for the filter. The name must be unique.
c. Define the filter user and their level of access.
-
Only me
: Select for private use. -
Everyone
: Select eitherUse
orEdit
. If you select Edit, everyone will be able to change the filter. -
Specified users, user groups or both
: Select from the availableUsers
orUser groups
, and then specify the level of control, that is, eitherUse
,Use and edit
, orUse, edit and manage
d. Click Save as new filter. The specified users will be able to select the filter from the Select a filter drop-down list.
Note: You can delete only the filters that you have created. To do so, select Delete filter from the overflow menu.
-
To use properties to define filters
-
To define a filter condition, complete the following steps:
a. Select a property from the Choose a property drop-down.
Note: The default Filter builder properties are

. An administrator can add additional properties for filtering.b. Select an operator appropriate to that property from the Choose an operator drop-down.
c. Depending on the property selected, either type in a value or select one using the Value field (or drop-down).
d. Click Apply to filter the Results table.
Note: You can delete, edit or disable the filter, or save it for future use. Any filter conditions you set are maintained in the URL, and can therefore be shared via direct-launch URL string.
Example filters:
-
Example 1: Select the

property, then theexcludes all
operator, then choose one of the available tags from the Value drop-down. Once applied, all results with that tag are excluded from the Results table. -
Example 2: Select the

property, then theequal to

-
All resources with geospatial data:
- All resources that have geospatial properties are displayed.
- The Area filter parameter is unavailable.
-
All resources without geospatial data:
- All resources without geospatial properties are displayed.
- The Area filter parameter is unavailable.
-

- Click Select area to open a world map. Use the cursor and zoom function to move to a desired location, then use the selection tool to specify the area. Click Apply selection to return to the previous screen, where all resources that have geospatial properties and are located within the selected area are listed.
- From here, you can clear or edit the area.
-
