Upgrading Infrastructure Management appliances
The following steps describe the process of upgrading Infrastructure Management appliances when a new release of IBM Cloud Pak for AIOps Infrastructure Automation is available.
Important: You can upgrade by a maximum of one release at a time. If the release that you want to upgrade from is more than one release behind the release that you are upgrading to, then you must upgrade sequentially. For more information, see Upgrade paths.
Before you begin
-
When you are upgrading, Kafka messaging configuration is required for the appliance setup. You can configure the broker on the same appliance where your database is configured. You can only have one Kafka broker per region. You can either configure the current appliance as a Kafka broker, or point the appliance to an existing external Kafka broker.
- Select between Configure this appliance as a messaging server or Connect to an external messaging system (to connect to an external Kafka broker). Fill in the necessary Message Client Parameters fields such as IP address and username/password.
- Click Proceed and the appliance_console will apply the configuration that you selected, and then restart evmserverd to apply the changes.
Notes:
- You can do a normal appliance rpm upgrade from 4.5.0 to 4.6.1.
- When you are upgrading to version 4.6.1 from a release that is older than 4.5.0, you must do a full appliance replacement. For more information, see Upgrade an Infrastructure Management appliance from 3.6.x.
About this task
Use the following steps to begin the appliance upgrade process.
Infrastructure Management has three types of appliances:
-
VMDB appliance - An Infrastructure Management appliance with running workers, which also hosts its own database that other appliances can connect to.
-
Non-VMDB appliance - An Infrastructure Management appliance with running workers that does not host a database. The appliance is connected to an external database.
-
Dedicated database appliance - An Infrastructure Management appliance or non-Infrastructure Management virtual machine with no running workers on it. The appliance contains only a database for other appliances to connect to.
