Creating block storage replication profiles

Create block storage replication profiles to establish the relationship between local and remote volumes for replication.

Before you begin

If you are using IP to handle all block storage replication traffic, you must configure IP addresses to use for block storage replication. For more information, see Configuring IP addresses for IP-based block disk replication.

About this task

You must create a block storage replication profile to define the volumes that are to be replicated as part of the block storage replication process. The user ID that is used to create the trust relationship must exist on both systems and must have the same password. The trust relationship is established when the block storage replication profile is configured on both systems.
Note: Your user name must have the following permissions to perform the steps in this task:
  • Manage block storage replication profiles (Full permission)
  • Manage security (Full permission)

Procedure

  1. From the console, click System > Block Storage Replication.
The Block Storage Replication Profiles page is displayed.
  2. Click the New icon.
If this is the first time that a block storage replication profile is created, you are presented with a copy of the Block Storage Replication Agreement. This agreement requires you to acknowledge that you are authorized to back up any third party software, and that you have appropriate licenses in place on the auxiliary system where this data is replicated.
  3. After reading the agreement, select the check box indicating that you understand and accept the stated responsibility.
  4. Click Agree and Continue to proceed, or click Cancel to cancel the profile creation process.

After you accept the agreement, the create process continues, displaying a dialog to collect basic information about the block storage replication profile you are creating.

  5. Select the IP based replication radio button to use IP to route block disk replication traffic.
Important: Before using IP-based replication, you must configure IP addresses. For steps to configure IP addresses, see Configuring IP addresses for IP-based block disk replication.
  6. Provide the following information:
    Name
The identity of the block storage replication profile.
    Description
An optional description of the block storage replication profile.
    Peer management location
The management IP address or fully-qualified host name of the system with which a relationship is being established for block storage replication purposes.

The management IP address and fully-qualified host name for each system can be found from the console by clicking System > Network Configuration. Expand the System Management IP section to display information about IPv4 and IPv6 Floating IP addresses. You can also use the Host name and Domain name fields to form a fully-qualified host name.

    Trust User ID
The name of a user on the remote system with the Security administration, Manage security (full permissions) role. This user ID establishes the trust relationship between the local and remote systems.
    Trust Password
The password that is associated with the Trust User ID on the remote system.
  7. Click OK to create the new profile, or click Cancel to close the window without creating a new profile.
A message is displayed indicating that the profile was created successfully. The new profile is then included in the Block Storage Replication Profiles page, and the initial state of the profile is set to Defined.
  8. On the system that you specified as a peer management location, create a similar block storage replication profile, ensuring that its peer management location points back to your local system.
After creating profiles on both local and remote systems, you can click the profile name on either system to display the details about the profile settings, validate and enable the profile, and then manage your block storage replication by adding and configuring volume pairs as needed.
