Passive Takeover operation

Run this operation to activate a IBM Storage Scale Passive configuration to replace a IBM Storage Scale Primary configuration to which it is attached.

Before you begin

If the Primary configuration is still running, before you run this operation you must have already run the Prepare Primary for Takeover operation on the Primary configuration to which this Passive configuration is attached.
Note: If you are handling an unplanned failover, and the Primary configuration is not running, you do not need to run the Prepare Primary for Takeover operation. The purpose of that operation is to detach the volumes from the IBM Storage Scale Primary nodes to allow the Passive configuration to take over. However, if the Primary instance is no longer running, this operation is unnecessary.

About this task

Run this operation if this is a IBM Storage Scale Passive configuration, it is already attached to a IBM Storage Scale Primary configuration, and you are activating the IBM Storage Scale Passive configuration to replace the associated Primary configuration as the new Primary configuration.

This operation is the last action you need to run to make the Passive configuration into a Primary configuration. When this operation completes, the Passive configuration must behave like a Primary configuration. A client should be able to access the IBM Storage Scale shared file systems using the IBM Storage Scale Manager virtual machine for this new Primary configuration.

When the Passive configuration becomes the Primary configuration, all IBM Storage Scale client requests are routed to this new Primary configuration, so the original Primary configuration can go off line, either for a maintenance window or due to unexpected failures.

Procedure

  1. Expand the Failover Active-Passive section of the GPFS_Manager operations.
  2. Expand the Passive Takeover node.
  3. Click Submit.
  4. Click Confirm when asked to validate your request.

Results

This operation performs the following tasks in the background:
  1. Starts all IBM Storage Scale Server nodes on this Passive configuration by running the following GPFS command:
    /usr/lpp/mmfs/bin/mmstartup -a

A new entry is displayed under the Operation Execution Results list, with the name Passive Takeover. When completed, the status of the operation changes from Active to Done, and the Return Value column displays the result of the operation as a link.

When you click the link, a new tab opens and shows the output of the operation. Verify that there are no errors in this log.
