Powering off compute nodes

Powering off compute nodes is part of the compute nodes maintenance tasks.

Before you begin

You must be assigned one of the following permissions to perform these steps:
  • System level, Hardware administration role with permission to Manage hardware resources (Full permission)
  • Resource level administration role with Write or All access rights permission (ACL) to view and manage a specific instance

About this task

You can use the console, the command line interface, or the REST API to complete this task. For the command line and REST API information, see the Related information section.

Procedure

  1. Click Hardware > Compute Nodes.
  2. Select a compute node.
  3. Click the Power off icon on the toolbar.
  4. In the dialog box that is displayed, ensure that you read any important information. To complete the operation, click Shutdown.
Attention: If you press the Power Off button on the hardware, the system reacts to this unexpected event by restarting the compute node. This automatic restart occurs because the system expects compute nodes to be powered off through the user interface, not by pressing the button on the hardware.

Results

  • Virtual machines that are running on the compute node are evacuated to other compute nodes in the same cloud group. When system-level high availability (HA) is enabled on the cloud group and if there is no space available for the virtual machines to be evacuated onto other compute nodes and spare compute nodes are available, spare compute nodes are moved into the cloud group and the virtual machines are moved to the spare compute nodes.
  • Virtual machines that are stopped on the compute node are not evacuated to other compute node in the same cloud group, that is, they stay on the current compute node. If you want to evacuate these stopped virtual machines to another compute node in the same cloud group, you must put the compute node into maintenance mode.
