Monitoring virtual system instances
You can monitor virtual system instances that are deployed in the cloud.
Before you begin
- You must have the Workload resources administration with Full permission to complete
this task.Note: If you do not have the Workload resources administration with Full permission, then the monitoring portal displays a blank screen or without any monitoring information.
- If you want to monitor virtual system instances,
you must deploy more shared services. These steps apply to virtual system instances that
were:
- Deployed from classic virtual system patterns.
- Promoted from classic virtual system patterns and still use hypervisor images.
- Deployed from virtual system patterns.
- For these virtual system instances:
- If you want to monitor a virtual system instance that contains a WebSphere® Application Server hypervisor image, ensure that the System Monitoring for WebSphere Application server shared service is deployed.
- If you want to monitor an IBM® HTTP Server, ensure that the System Monitoring for HTTP Servers shared service is deployed.
- You can deploy the System Monitoring for WebSphere Application server shared service or the System Monitoring for HTTP Servers shared service in a cloud group to enable the collection of performance and availability data from applications that are running on virtual system instances within that cloud group that use WebSphere Application Server or IBM HTTP Server hypervisor images or software components. The shared service uses a monitoring agent and data collector to collect the data from these applications. For steps to deploy a shared service, see the Related tasks section.
- If you want to monitor Liberty servers in Liberty virtual system patterns (not classic virtual system patterns), ensure that the System Monitoring for Liberty shared service is deployed.
- If you want to monitor WebSphere MQ in Liberty virtual system patterns, ensure that the System Monitoring for WebSphere MQ shared service is deployed.
- The Enable monitoring for workload instance owners and read-only users in the system option in shared service can be used to control the view access to the monitoring portal. It is applicable for read-only users and users with no permission but with access to pattern, environment profile, and instance. If this option is selected, the monitoring portal displays instance details, otherwise it displays a gray or a blank screen. For more information, see Table 1.
About this task
The System Monitoring shared service provides the monitoring infrastructure that allows monitoring agents to collect performance and availability information. You can use this information to troubleshoot your system and make business decisions about your hardware and service usage.
You can extend the System Monitoring shared service to collect performance and availability data about middleware in a cloud group. Monitoring services for middleware are separate shared services that are deployed in addition to the base System Monitoring shared service.
Procedure
- Click .
- Select the instance that you want to monitor. The virtual system instance details display to the right.
- Click Manage in the toolbar.
- Click the Monitoring tab.
