Creating a IBM Storage Scale Client component with IBM Storage Scale Client script packages

Use the Pattern Builder to create virtual system patterns or classic virtual system patterns with IBM Storage Scale Client script packages for deploying a IBM Storage Scale Client component.

Before you begin

You must be granted access to patterns, access to create patterns, or have the Workload resources administration with Full permission to complete this task.

About this task

Use the Pattern Builder to create a virtual system pattern, or use the Pattern Editor to create a classic virtual system pattern for deploying a IBM Storage Scale Client instance.

When you create a IBM Storage Scale Client virtual system, you add two IBM Storage Scale Client script packages to a pattern component (for example an OS Node). These script packages contain the required IBM Storage Scale installation code for connecting the deployed pattern instance to a IBM Storage Scale Server. The deployed pattern instance can then access and use the shared file system associated with the IBM Storage Scale Server.

For more information about creating and deploying virtual system patterns and classic virtual system patterns, see the Related links.

Procedure

  1. Create a virtual system pattern by using the Pattern Builder, or create a classic virtual system pattern by using the Pattern Editor.
Configure your pattern as needed by providing the necessary information in the pattern properties pane and save your changes.
  2. For each pattern component that is being configured as a IBM Storage Scale Client, select the Allocate directories on the GPFS shared files server script package from the Scripts section of the Pattern Builder or Pattern Editor and drag and drop it onto the pattern component on the canvas.
  3. Select each IBM Storage Scale Client pattern component in the canvas, and configure the following settings:
    • If you are creating a virtual system pattern in the Pattern Builder, configure the following settings:
Allocate directories on the IBM Storage Scale shared files server section
You are prompted for the following file system mount properties:
IBM Storage Scale File System Information
The name of a file system that is defined on the IBM Storage Scale Server.

The IBM Storage Scale Server Get Cluster Status operation provides a list of defined file systems and associated file sets. You can define a new file system by using the IBM Storage Scale Server Attach Storage Volumes operation.

      IBM Storage Scale Fileset directory
The name of the IBM Storage Scale file set directory. A file set is created within the specified file system if the file set does not already exist.
Note: Blank spaces are not allowed in the file set name, and avoid using the text string IBM Storage Scale in the name.
      Storage Maximum limit (K,M,G)
The maximum amount of data that the file set can use. Specify the unit in kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes by adding K, M, or G as a suffix (Example: specify 100M for 100 megabytes). Specify the size as a positive integer with no preceding plus (+) character.

You must manage the storage quota to ensure that the specified storage limit does not exceed the size of the file system.

Directory to link on local system
A symbolic link to the file set is created on the virtual machine file system at the location specified. The value specified must be a syntactically correct directory name, starting with a forward slash (/) character (Example: /myFileSetLink. Spaces are not allowed in the link name.
IBM Storage Scale user group GID
Optional. Use this value to set the GID of the IBM Storage Scale user group, gpfsadmin. The GID must be a numeric value, such as 501, 402.
      IBM Storage Scale user UID
Optional. Use this value to set the UID of the IBM Storage Scale user, gpfsprod. The UID must be a numeric value, such as 5001, 4002.

Click Save at the top of the Pattern Builder canvas to save your changes.

    • If you are creating a classic virtual system pattern in the Pattern Editor, configure the following settings:
      FILE_SYSTEM_NAME
The name of a file system that is defined on the IBM Storage Scale Server.

The IBM Storage Scale Server Get Cluster Status operation provides a list of defined file systems and associated file sets. You can define a new file system by using the IBM Storage Scale Server Attach Storage Volumes operation.

      FILE_SET_NAME
The name of the IBM Storage Scale file set directory. A file set is created within the specified file system if the file set does not already exist.
Note: Blank spaces are not allowed in the file set name, and avoid using the text string IBM Storage Scale in the name.
      FILE_SIZE_NAME
The maximum amount of data that the file set can use. Specify the unit in kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes by adding K, M, or G as a suffix (Example: specify 100M for 100 megabytes). Specify the size as a positive integer with no preceding plus (+) character.

You must manage the storage quota to ensure that the specified storage limit does not exceed the size of the file system.

      FILE_SET_LINK_NAME
A symbolic link to the file set is created on the virtual machine file system at the location specified. The value specified must be a syntactically correct directory name, starting with a forward slash (/) character (Example: /myFileSetLink. Spaces are not allowed in the link name.
      user_GID
Optional. Use this value to set the GID of the IBM Storage Scale user group, gpfsadmin. The GID must be a numeric value, such as 501, 402.
      user_UID
Optional. Use this value to set the UID of the IBM Storage Scale user, gpfsprod. The UID must be a numeric value, such as 5001, 4002.

Click OK to save your settings.

  4. For each pattern component that is being configured as a IBM Storage Scale Client, select the GPFS Client Operations script package from the Scripts section of the Pattern Builder or Pattern Editor and drag and drop it onto the same pattern component on the canvas where you placed the Allocate directories on the GPFS shared files server script package.
  5. You can select the GPFS Client Operations script package in the pattern component and display the following settings in the properties pane:
    • If you are creating a virtual system pattern in the Pattern Builder, in the IBM Storage Scale Client Operations section the following property is displayed:
      IBM Storage Scale Client Operations
There are three actions that you can perform using this script package whenever you run it after deployment:
      • Show Client Status
      • Connect to IBM Storage Scale shared service Server: Use this operation to connect to the IBM Storage Scale Server specified that is by the IBM Storage Scale shared service instance that is deployed in the same environment profile as the client deployment
      • Connect to same IBM Storage Scale Server: Use this operation if the client instance was already connected to a IBM Storage Scale Server (that was specified by the IBM Storage Scale shared service or that was specified by using the Connect to server operation user interface) and you want to reconnect to the same IBM Storage Scale Server.
      • Generate new IBM Storage Scale key for Client Cluster

By default the Show Client Status action is displayed in the selection box. You do not need to change this or select another option at this time. After deployment, when you choose to run this script package for a deployed virtual machine instance, you can select any of the three actions to perform, and provide other required parameters, such as an administrator user name and password.

    • If you are creating a classic virtual system pattern in the Pattern Editor, the following property is displayed:
      ACTION
There are three actions that you can perform using this script package whenever you run it after deployment:
      • Show Client Status
      • Connect to server
      • Generate new IBM Storage Scale key for Client Cluster

By default the Show Client Status action is displayed in the selection box. You do not need to change this or select another option at this time. After deployment, when you choose to run this script package for a deployed virtual machine instance, you can select any of the three actions to perform, and provide other required parameters, such as an administrator user name and password.

Results

Your new pattern is saved. You can find it in the appropriate pattern catalog in the console.

What to do next

You can continue to configure your IBM Storage Scale pattern deployment as needed, and you can deploy your IBM Storage Scale virtual system pattern or classic virtual system pattern to create IBM Storage Scale Client instances in your Cloud Pak System environment.

After deployment you can perform additional operations to manage the IBM Storage Scale configuration as needed.
