Powering management virtual machines (VMs) on and off

You might need to power on or power off a management virtual machine (VM) before and after completing system administration tasks that require the management virtual machine (VM) to be in powered off state.

Before you begin

You must be assigned one of the following permissions to do these steps:
  • Hardware administration role with permission to Manage hardware resources (Full permission) to view and manage all compute node instances
  • Resource level administration role with Write or All access rights permission (ACL) to view and manage all management virtual machines.

About this task

The following list of Management Virtual Machines are available. Complete the procedure that is based on the following management virtual machines.
Platform System Manager
Procedure
  1. Click Hardware > Management VMs.
  2. Select the Platform System Manager virtual machine (VM) that you want to power on or power off.
  3. Click the Power on icon in the toolbar.
    You can power off the management virtual machine (VM) by clicking the Power off icon on the toolbar.
    Note: The management virtual machine (VM) update job that does the power off and the failover of the virtual machine (VM) displays as failed after the non-leader node becomes leader, or active, Platform System Manager.
    Remember: Power off is disabled for the leader Platform System Manager virtual machine. Therefore, you cannot do the shutdown operation.
Service console
Procedure
  1. Click Hardware > Management VMs.
  2. Select the service console management virtual machine (VM) that you want to power on or power off.
  3. Click the Power on icon in the toolbar.
    You can power off the service console management virtual machine (VM) by clicking the Power off icon on the toolbar.
    Note: The management node update job that does the power off and the failover of the node displays as failed after the non-leader node becomes leader or active.
VMware vCenter appliance
Note: The vCenter appliance management virtual machine (VM) cannot be recycled. Therefore, you cannot power on and power off the vCenter appliance. The power buttons are disabled on the IBM Cloud Pak System user interface.
