Performing restore operations

You can select to restore system level and component level data from the available list of restore locations.

Using your previously defined backup locations and backup configuration profiles, you should be running regular backups as needed for your environment, storing the backup data on one or more remote systems. At some point you might need to restore some of that data, perhaps to recover a component that was inadvertently deleted or became corrupted or otherwise unusable.
Note: In the context of performing restore operations on backed up data, your previously defined backup locations are now also referred to as restore locations.

The restore function provided in Cloud Pak System Software for Power® includes the ability to restore data at the component level and, for authorized IBM service representatives only, at the system level. In most cases you should be able to restore artifact data using a component level restore. At the component level you can specify to restore only specific components that have been backed up within the selected component type.

In more serious situations, you might need to restore system level data, to restore management nodes that have become unusable. Generally you should contact IBM Support to perform a system level restore only after you have exhausted all other options to restore data at the component level. Only authorized IBM service representatives can perform system level restore operations.

In addition to restoring data from any of your available restore locations, you can also define other alternate restore locations, from which you can restore only component level data.

You can display the list of available restore locations that have backed up data, and you can select among them to restore data as needed to your Cloud Pak System Software for Power environment. Use the Restore table in the Backup and Restore page of the console to select the appropriate restore location, and select only the option to perform a component level restore operation.

For a component level restore, you can select one or more available component types, and select from the list of backed up components within each type to restore to your environment. You can also use REST API commands and CLI commands to perform many of the same tasks.

To access restore functions, you must have all of the following user roles and permissions:
  • Workload resources administration with Manage workload resources (Full permission)
  • Cloud group administration with Manage cloud resources (Full permission)
  • Hardware administration with Manage hardware resources (Full permission)
