Administering management virtual machines (VMs)

Administering the management virtual machines (VMs) in the system includes day to day operations such as powering on and powering off management virtual machines (VMs).

Management virtual machines (VMs)

The management virtual machines (VMs) that constitute in IBM Cloud Pak System are described as follows:
Service Console
The IBM Cloud Pak System service console is used to provide access for the IBM CE/SSR to the user interface of the components with the following Intel-based Machine Types (MT):
  • 8558
  • 8564
  • 9568
This is the primary interface for the IBM CE/SSR to the system. The service console protects access to the system while providing IBM CE/SSRs with access to the component user interface to service the components within the system. The service console runs as a virtual machine (VM) on each management node.
Platform System Manager (PSM)
Platform System Manager (PSM) is a fully integrated system that includes hardware, software, hypervisors, and network devices, that are all converged into a single physical box and managed through a unified console. It comes in multiple configurations, supporting x86 based cores. The Platform System Manager (PSM) comprises of the following components:
  • Platform System Manager (PSM) OS (Red Hat Enterprise Linux® (RHEL) and Red Hat virtualization)
  • Db2®
  • Tivoli System Automation (TSA)
  • VMware
  • Workload management
VMware vCenter appliance
The VMware vCenter appliance virtual machine is a preconfigured virtual machine that is optimized to run the VMware vCenter Server and the associated services. IBM Cloud Pak System uses the VMware vCenter Server appliance to manage the ESXi host and the virtual machine life cycles. It is hosted on the primary management node.
