Administering compute nodes
Administering the compute nodes in the system includes day to day operations, such as starting and maintaining compute nodes.
About this task
Compute nodes contain components such as microprocessors, memory, and Ethernet controllers.
The number of virtual machines that can be deployed on a compute node depends on the vCPU and memory allocations for the virtual machines.
On each managed compute node, Cloud Pak System Software automatically reserves core and memory resources that are not available for deployments. These reserved resources are used by the VIO Servers and vary depending on the size of the compute node.
Another factor to consider is the level of performance that you want for your virtual machines. For example, for a compute node with 16 cores and 256 GB of memory in a cloud group that is configured as type Average, you can deploy 128 1-vCPU VMs with 1.5 GB, but each virtual machine gets only 1/8 of a physical core.
