Starting and quiescing compute nodes

Starting and quiescing compute nodes are part of the day to day tasks to power on and maintain compute nodes.

Before you begin

You must be assigned one of the following permissions to perform these steps:
  • Hardware administration role with permission to Manage hardware resources (Full permission)
  • Resource level administration role with Read access rights permission (ACL) to view a specific instance
  • Resource level administration role with Write or All access rights permission (ACL) to view and manage a specific instance

About this task

Remember:

If a compute node has the IBM Storage Scale nodes on it, place the compute node in stored state before you place it in Quiesced state.

You might want to start a compute node to complete any of the following tasks:
  • Move it out of the Maintenance state.
  • Move it out of the Quiesced state. The Quiesced state can be user-initiated or system-initiated.

You can use the console, the command line interface, or the REST API to complete this task. For the command line and REST API information, see the Related information section.

Procedure

  1. Click Hardware > Compute Resource.
  2. Select a compute node.
  3. To start the compute node, click the Start icon in the toolbar. To quiesce the compute node, click the Quiesce icon in the toolbar.

Results

When a compute node is in Quiesced state, the compute node cannot accept system deployments, though any virtual machines that are present on the node might still be running.

If the system initiated the quiesce task, the compute node might not be reachable.
