Performance report

This section contains information about the performance characteristics of releases of CICS® TS. The Performance Report gives a broad understanding of important concepts of CICS performance, and describes many of the performance improvements that can be realized by upgrading CICS. This information was previously published as an IBM Redbook: IBM CICS Performance Series: CICS TS for z/OS V5 Performance Report, (SG24-8298).

The information is useful for the following people:
  • System architects who want to understand the performance characteristics and capabilities of a release of CICS TS.
  • Capacity planners and performance analysts who want to understand how an upgrade to the latest release of CICS TS can affect their environment.
  • Application developers who want to design and code highly optimized applications for deployment into a CICS TS environment.
The Performance Report includes the following information:
  • Description of factors that are involved in the interaction between IBM Z hardware and a z/OS software environment.
  • Definition of key terminology that is used in the descriptions of the results of CICS TS performance benchmarks.
  • Presentation of how to collect the required data, and the methodology used, when you apply Large Scale Performance Reference (LSPR) capacity information to a CICS workload in your environment.
  • Outline of the techniques that are applied by the IBM CICS Performance Team to achieve consistent and accurate performance benchmark results.
  • High-level descriptions of several key workloads that are used to determine the performance characteristics of a CICS TS release.
  • Introduction to the open transaction environment and task control block (TCB) management logic in CICS TS, including a reference that describes how several configuration attributes combine to affect the behavior of the CICS TS dispatcher.
  • Detailed information about the changes in performance characteristics between successive releases of CICS TS.
  • Results of small performance studies from the IBM CICS Performance Team to determine the cost of using a specific CICS TS functional area.
