Virtualization

CICS® Transaction Gateway for IBM® z/OS® supports virtualization solutions that can be implemented either by the hardware, or by the operating system.

Virtualization solutions for the CICS Transaction Gateway for IBM z/OS

If CICS Transaction Gateway for IBM z/OS is running on one of the supported operating systems, hardware-based virtualization can be provided by a hypervisor (virtual machine manager). CICS Transaction Gateway supports the following hypervisors:
  • IBM Processor Resource/System Manager (PR/SM) hypervisor with IBM z/OS or Linux® operating systems.
  • IBM z/VM® hypervisor with IBM z/OS or Linux operating systems.

The redistributable runtime components supplied with CICS Transaction Gateway for IBM z/OS are supported in the following virtualization environments:

  • IBM (PR/SM) hypervisor with IBM z/OS or Linux operating systems.
  • IBM z/VM hypervisor with IBM z/OS or Linux operating systems.
  • IBM PowerVM® hypervisor with IBM IBM AIX® or Linux operating systems.
  • VMware ESX Server with Windows or Linux operating systems.
  • Red Hat® KVM with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system.
  • SUSE KVM with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) operating system.

If using a virtualization environment, defect support is available when the operating system and any additional software used by CICS Transaction Gateway is listed in the supported software statement for the version of CICS Transaction Gateway that you are using.

Unless stated otherwise, CICS Transaction Gateway has not been tested in specific virtualization environments. CICS Transaction Gateway Support is therefore unable to assist in issues related to configuration and setup, or issues directly related to, the virtualization environment itself. If issues that are related to the virtualization environment arise , the user may need to contact the virtualization environment vendor for support, or the issue may need to be recreated outside of the virtualization environment in order to receive CICS Transaction Gateway support.

This statement also applies to shared root configurations, such as IBM AIX workload partitions. CICS Transaction Gateway has not been adapted to use shared root virtualization, so some configurations may not be achievable.

Support for IBM z/OS Container Extension (IBM zCX)

CICS Transaction Gateway can now be containerized and run on IBM® z/OS® Container Extensions IBM zCX) and makes it possible to integrate Linux on IBM Z® CICS TG container with z/OS. For more details , refer : <Link>

CICS Transaction Gateway applications can now be containerized and run on IBM zCX taking advantage of colocation of data, when Gateway is running on IBM Z. This is beneficial as it provides better latency, application portability, better resource utilization, and other benefits of containerization aspects.
