Configure data protection

Protect your data by configuring versioning, object lock, and legal hold.

About this task

Data protection features help prevent accidental deletion or modification of objects. You can configure bucket versioning and apply object lock and legal hold settings to protect your data.

Configure bucket versioning

Enable or suspend versioning to retain multiple versions of objects.

About this task

Versioning allows you to keep multiple versions of an object to protect against accidental deletion or overwrite.
Important: After versioning is enabled, it cannot be turned off. You can only suspend it.

Procedure

  1. Open the bucket that you want to manage.
  2. Go to the Data management tab.
  3. Locate the versioning settings.
  4. Enable or suspend versioning.

Results

Bucket versioning is configured for the selected bucket.

Configure object lock and legal hold

Protect objects from deletion or modification by using object lock and legal hold.

About this task

Object lock prevents objects from being deleted or overwritten for a defined period. Legal hold provides an additional protection mechanism that prevents modification regardless of retention settings.
Object lock must be enabled when the bucket is created and cannot be enabled later. If object lock is not enabled, object-level protection features are not available.
Important: Object lock status is inherited from the bucket configuration.

For more information, see Create a bucket.

Procedure

  1. Select an object from the Objects view.
  2. Open the object details.
  3. View the object lock settings.
Object lock settings are inherited from the bucket configuration and cannot be enabled at the object level.
  4. Configure retention settings.
Specify a retention period by selecting a date or duration.
Note: In compliance mode, retention settings cannot be shortened after they are set.
  5. Enable or disable legal hold.
Legal hold prevents the object from being deleted or modified while it is enabled.
Note: Legal hold can be applied only if object lock is enabled for the bucket.

Results

The selected object is protected according to the configured retention and legal hold settings.
