Setting plot properties

You can set maximum two plots on a chart. The chart type that you select first is used as the default plot. For example, if the first chart type is Area, then the default plot is Area.

Before you begin

If you plan to plot time series data on X-axis, then ensure that you use Line, Area, or Stacked Columns chart on both the plots.

About this task

The following procedure lists all the plot properties, irrespective of the chart type. A few properties might not be applicable to a chart type and hence, might not present for those charts.

Complete the following steps to set plot properties for the default chart:

  1. To set plot properties, in the navigation pane of the Chart tab, click Plots.
  2. From the Y-axis list, select the default Y-axis for the chart.
Usually, the default Y-axis is Default Left Y-axis.
Note: If you want the Change Scale option to be displayed on the Line chart, then ensure that the default chart type is Line chart. For more information, see Log scale and Linear scale.
  3. Complete any one of the following steps based on the chart type:
    • If the chart is a Bar or Column chart, then complete the following steps:
      • From the Gap between Columns list, select a space between two consecutive bars or columns in a chart.
        • For dual plots, if both the chart types are either bars or columns charts, then you must select the same gap option for both the plots.
        • If you want percent values to be displayed on the tooltips, then ensure that chart type for Plot 1 (default plot) is either Stacked Columns or Stacked Bars.
      • For Clustered Bars and Clustered Columns charts, if you want the columns or bars to display Y-axis values, then select Display Y-axis values on bars and columns checkbox .
The values are displayed at the top of the columns or bars.
Note: The values are displayed only if the Clustered Bars and Clustered Columns charts contain a single plot only. If the charts contain two plots, then the values are not displayed.
    • If the chart is an Area or Line chart, then complete the following steps:
      1. From the Line Style list, select a style for the plot.
      2. To display markers, select Show Markers.
Note: The first plot that you define is the default plot.
  4. To add another plot, click Add Another, and complete the following steps:
    1. Expand Plot 2.
    2. From the Chart Type list, select a chart type other than the one selected for the default first plot.
    3. From the Y-Axis list, select a Y-axis for the chart, and repeat the steps that are provided earlier in to set plot properties for the selected chart type.
Note: You can select Right Y-Axis only if you added a right Y-axis while setting properties for Y-axis. For more information, see Setting X-axis and Y-axis properties.

To delete the second plot, click the Delete Delete icon that is displayed on the plot.
