Editing process diagrams with Blueworks Live IQ

Edit your process diagram directly in Blueworks Live IQ through conversational prompts to improve BPMN completeness and make changes to your diagram structure.

Before you begin

Important: This feature is currently a technology preview.

Before you begin, make sure that you have access to Blueworks Live IQ and appropriate permissions to edit the process diagram.

You must have an Editor license.

About this task

Edit your process diagrams with Blueworks Live IQ by using natural language commands in the AI chat interface. Instead of manually adding, moving, or removing elements in the diagram editor, you can describe the changes you want and IQ applies them directly to your process blueprint.

This capability is particularly valuable when working through process analysis, where Blueworks Live IQ might identify multiple issues that need correction. You can move seamlessly from identifying problems to fixing them within the same conversation, creating a more efficient improvement workflow. For example, if your process is missing a critical approval step, you can immediately ask IQ to add that activity in the appropriate location.

In this technology preview, Blueworks Live IQ can perform the following types of modifications:
Activities
  • Create new activities and position them in the process flow
  • Remove existing activities and adjust connections
  • Move activities to different positions in the diagram
Gateways
  • Create new exclusive gateways to add decision points
  • Remove gateways and simplify process flows
  • Move gateways to different locations
Milestones
  • Create new milestones to mark important process phases
End events
  • Connect end events within your process to other activities or end events to extend or correct process flows.
Diagram elements properties
  • Add, edit, and remove the following properties:
    • Systems
    • Cycle Time (including work time and wait time)
    • Cost
    • Risk
    • Value Add

Procedure

  1. Open your process blueprint and switch to the process diagram view.
  2. Open the Blueworks Live AI assistant chat and click the Blueworks Live IQ tile.
  3. Describe the change that you want to make by using a conversational prompt. Be specific in your prompts for best results, for example:
    • "Add an approval activity called 'Legal Review' between 'Draft Contract' and 'Send to Customer'"
    • "Create a gateway after 'Check Inventory' to handle the case when items are out of stock"
    • "Remove the 'Secondary Approval' activity since we no longer need that step"
    • "Move the 'Quality Check' activity to occur before 'Package Items'"
    • "Add a milestone called 'Order Confirmed' after the payment is processed"
Tip: Instead of "improve this process," try "add an approval activity called 'Manager Review' between 'Submit Request' and 'Process Payment' with a duration of 1 day."
  4. Review the changes that Blueworks Live IQ proposes to make and confirm these changes to apply them to your process diagram.

If the change is supported, IQ applies the modifications directly to your process diagram. The modified diagram becomes your current working version. You can continue making additional changes or review the results in the diagram editor.

If the modification that you requested is not currently supported, Blueworks Live IQ informs you and might suggest alternative approaches.

Note: When you request a diagram change, the system automatically creates a snapshot of your current process version, so you can always revert to this snapshot if you need to undo the modifications.

Results

Blueworks Live IQ applies BPMN best practices automatically when making changes, which helps ensure that new elements follow proper notation standards and connect logically to existing flows.
