Generating names for process instances

When you run a process, Business Automation Workflow creates a default name for the process instance. This name is visible to business users in Process Portal, allowing them to distinguish between different instances of a process as they complete their work. In Process Designer, you can change the way these process instance names are generated.

About this task

By default, the name for each instance of a process is the process name plus the instance ID. The name for a given process instance is displayed in many different places in Process Portal, including the users Work list, in the dashboards and in the details for all the tasks associated with the process instance. To modify the way that the process instance names for a given process are generated, complete the following steps.

Procedure

  1. Open the process go to the Overview tab.
  2. In the Advanced section, change the text in the Instance name field if you want the name of each instance to be something other than the process name. Be sure to retain the quotation marks around the text.
By default, the instance ID is appended to the instance name that you specify, using the tw.system.process.instanceId variable. You can remove this variable or use the variable picker to choose additional variables.
  3. Click Save or Finish Editing.
