Envelopes

Envelopes enclose EDI data much like an envelope encloses paper documents.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) overview

EDI is a format or standard that is developed to create electronic versions of the otherwise traditional business documents. Each standard contains information about the type and order of information and the tags (or codes) that are embedded in the information to identify different sections. The standards might be specific to industries or geographic regions. Data that is formatted in a supported EDI format or standard can be detected and parsed automatically. When the application parses the data based on EDI formats and standards, it identifies the tags to separate the tagged data.

Each EDI transmission can be addressed to more than one receiver. So, the information must be tagged such that each receiver's section contains the information that is tagged to them. Such a section is called an EDI interchange. When the information is parsed, the application generates a new message for each interchange and receiver.

The senders and receivers of EDI are identified by using IDs. You can select your IDs and qualifiers to communicate with your trading partners. An EDI can be associated with more than one mailslot.

Supported EDI standards

Envelopes in Configuration Hub support X12, EDIFACT, VDA, and TRADACOM Standards. The Accredited Standards Committee X12 (ASC X12), chartered by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), maintains the standards.

Standards information and related data that is embedded in the data table in the Licensee Software, Outsourcing Services and Combined Software Solutions are protected by copyright and other the intellectual property of X12 Incorporated, a nonprofit organization that is chartered by the American National Standards Institute to develop and maintain EDI standards and XML schemas. To provide and fund these activities in serving American industry, X12 is willing to grant to all end users of the Licensee Software, Outsourcing Services or Combined Software Solutions a license at a royalty of $180 per year. IBM strongly recommends that you contact X12 at Licensing Partner to obtain a license to use and access X12 metadata, represented in, for example, more than 30 versions of more than 300 transaction sets and implementation guides, through X12’s online viewer, Glass.

Envelopes details

The following details are displayed on the Envelopes listing page in the Envelopes tab.

Configuration overview
This column enlists envelope configurations based on the environment. The column also displays the following information about the envelope configuration:
  • A checkbox, which you can use to select the envelope to do further action, such as export the envelope. For more information, see Exporting envelopes and Undeploying envelopes.
  • The status of the envelope configuration in the environment.
Note: For more information about different statuses of envelope, see Envelope statuses.
  • The business alias where the envelope configuration is created.
  • The Sender ID and Receiver ID associated with the envelope.
Owned by
Displays the name of the user that created the envelope.

Other controls
You can do the following actions.
  • Filter conditions.
  • You can use the Search field to type and refine the list of envelopes.

The Global control numbers tab displays information regarding creating and maintaining global control numbers. For more information, see Creating global control number configurations.

Envelope statuses

Your envelope configuration can assume different statuses during the process of creating, editing, deploying, and undeploying envelope configurations. Refer to the following table that describes the envelope statuses.

Icon Status Description

In progress Either you or someone else has checked out the envelope to make changes to it. The envelope configuration, therefore, is not yet deployed or available for use.

Modified The envelope configuration is now modified and saved. However, it is not yet deployed.

Deployed The envelope configuration is now deployed in either CTE or production and is available for use.

Deployment failed The deployment for the envelope configuration failed for some reason. Check the reason and resolve the issue. Then, re-deploy the envelope for it to be available for use.

Undeployed The deployment of the envelope configuration has been removed or revoked from the environment. However, it continues to remain in Configuration Hub in the inactive state. To use the envelope configuration, you must first deploy it in an environment.
Tip: To bulk deploy and bulk undeploy, you can select envelope rows and select the respective bulk action. Then, to track the bulk action status, you can go to the Jobs listing page. For more information about bulk jobs, see Working with jobs.
You can perform the following bulk actions for envelopes.
  • Exporting envelopes
  • Importing envelopes
  • Deleting envelopes
  • Deploying envelopes
  • Undeploying envelopes
