This glossary provides terms and definitions for the Global Mailbox software and products.

A

adapter
An intermediary software component that allows two other software components to communicate with one another.
adapter container
An entity in IBM Sterling B2B Integrator that contains service adapters.
Applicability Statement 2 (AS2)
An EDI protocol for securely exchanging data over the Internet, by using HTTP as a transport.
application
Software that processes the messages that are uploaded to Global Mailbox.
AS2

asynchronous replication
In replication, the process of copying data from a source table to a target table outside the scope of the original transaction that updated the source table.

B

business process
A defined set of business activities that represent the required steps to achieve a business objective. A business process includes the flow and use of information and resources.

C

cluster
A group of application servers that collaborate for the purposes of workload balancing and failover.
consumer
An entity that receives data from another entity.
consumer mailbox path
A configuration within a routing channel template that defines a mailbox that Sterling File Gateway will add messages to during delivery.

D

data consistency
The state of data that is valid, accurate and up-to-date across systems and data centers. In Global Mailbox, a high degree of consistency comes at the cost of performance.
dead-letter mailbox
A mailbox that stores messages that cannot be added to a particular mailbox. The primary role of this mailbox is to provide temporary data storage until the administrator can correct the problem.
dynamic routing channel
A routing channel that allows the consumer to be identified at route time based on the mailbox path or arrived file.

E

ERA
See Event Rule Adapter.
event notification
The process of notifying a user about an event.
event rule
A business rule that determines how events are processed and what type of response, such as an event alert, is returned. In the complex event processing (CEP) tools, an event rule is called a situation.

extraction criteria
The criteria to extract messages from the database for purging.

F

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
In TCP/IP, an application layer protocol that uses TCP and Telnet services to transfer bulk-data files between machines or hosts.
Fix Central
An external IBM website from which installation packages of all IBM products for the Fix Pack releases can be downloaded.
fix pack
A cumulative collection of fixes that is released between scheduled refresh packs, manufacturing refreshes, or releases. A fix pack updates the system to a specific maintenance level.
FTP
See File Transfer Protocol.

G

General Parallel File System (GPFS)
A high-performance shared-disk file system that can provide data access from nodes in a clustered system environment.
Global Mailbox Event Rule Adapter
An adapter that listens to the events generated by the Global Mailbox and accepts the events over WebSphere MQ when the events are available.
Global Mailbox management node
The system that manages Global Mailboxes and Messages.
GPFS

H

HA
See high availability.
high availability (HA)
Pertaining to a clustered system that is reconfigured when node or daemon failures occur so that workloads can be redistributed to the remaining nodes in the cluster.
host name
In Internet communication, the name given to a computer. The host name might be a fully qualified domain name such as mycomputer.city.company.com, or it might be a specific subname such as mycomputer. See also IP address.

I

initiating consumer
A consumer that is actively connected to Sterling Integrator/Sterling File Gateway (SI/SFG) to retrieve or add files from or to their mailboxes.
installation directory
A directory in which unique files for a package are stored.
Installation Manager
An application that helps users install, update, roll back, and modify certain IBM product installation packages.
IP address
A unique address for a device or logical unit on a network that uses the Internet Protocol standard. See also host name.

K

keystore file
A key ring that contains both public keys that are stored as signer certificates and private keys that are stored in personal certificates.

L

listening consumer
A consumer that passively waits for files to be delivered to them through a protocol connection initiated by Sterling File Gateway.
load balancer
Software or hardware that distributes workload across a set of servers to ensure that servers are not overloaded. The load balancer also directs users to another server if the initial server fails.
local data center
A data center that is co-located on the same server with the other components in the setup.

M

mailbox
A secure document payload repository, organized in a hierarchical tree structure.
management node
A node that is used for configuring, administering, and monitoring a system.
message
A reference to a payload and metadata about the payload, such as creation date, size, type and extraction policy.
metadata
Data that describes the characteristics of data; descriptive data.

N

node
In a network configuration, the physical machine that contains one or more related functional units.

O

operating system (OS)
A collection of system programs that control the overall operation of a computer system.

PA
See Passport Advantage.
parallel repair
A command that repairs all Cassandra nodes simultaneously.
Passport Advantage (PA, PPA)
An external IBM website from which installation packages of all IBM products for the version, release, and modification type of releases can be downloaded.
password based encryption key (PBE key)
A key that encrypts the value of sensitive properties that are stored in a Global Mailbox database.
payload
An actual business document or file. The payload is not directly stored in a mailbox but referenced to via a message.
PBE key
See password based encryption key.
perimeter server
Communication management software that can be installed in a DMZ and manages communication flows between a perimeter network and Sterling B2B Integrator TCP-based transport adapters.
port number
In Internet communications, the identifier for a logical connector between an application entity and the transport service.
PPA
See Passport Advantage.
producer
A partner who creates and sends files.
producer mailbox path
A configuration within a routing channel template that specifies the path to a mailbox that is monitored by Sterling File Gateway.
protocol
A set of rules controlling the communication and transfer of data between two or more devices or systems in a communication network.
purge
The process by which old data is removed from the system database. Purges minimize the number of unused database records to increase search efficiency and reduce the size of the required physical disk.

Q

queue-based event processing
The process of an event, which is governed by an event rule, being generated and put into the messaging queue whenever a message is added to a Global Mailbox.
queue manager
A component of a message queuing system that provides queuing services to applications.

R

RCT
See routing channel template.
replication
The process of maintaining a defined set of data in more than one location. Replication involves copying designated changes for one location (a source) to another (a target) and synchronizing the data in both locations.
replication request migration job
A job that creates entries in the new replication queue table for PENDING application requests initiated by V5.2.6.2 nodes.
Representational State Transfer (REST)
A software architectural style for distributed hypermedia systems like the World Wide Web. The term is also often used to describe any simple interface that uses XML (or YAML, JSON, plain text) over HTTP without an additional messaging layer such as SOAP.
response file
A file that can be customized with the setup and configuration data that automates an installation. During an interactive installation, the setup and configuration data must be entered, but with a response file, the installation can proceed without any intervention.

rolling upgrade
In clustered systems, updating the system software on a cluster without interrupting service to the users of the cluster.
routing channel
A channel configuration that matches incoming producer files with consumers, transforms the files according to the format specified in the consumer file structure, and sends them to the correct consumer.
routing channel template (RCT)
A template that defines the structure through which routing occurs. The RCT specifies producer and consumer mailbox structures and file structures. It mandates which partners can participate in various file transfer scenarios and which file formats they must use. An RCT is required to create a routing channel, which establishes the producer-consumer relationship for file transfers.
routing rule
A rule that enables Sterling B2B Integrator Mailbox to take automatic action when a message is added to a mailbox, such as notifying a business process to process the message.

S

scheduled job
A batch job that becomes eligible to run at a specified date and time.
schema
A collection of database objects such as tables, views, indexes, or triggers that define a database. A schema provides a logical classification of database objects.
SFG partner
See Sterling File Gateway partner.
shared disk
A disk that is configured to serve more than one node. Shared disks are physically connected to multiple nodes. See also shared file system.
shared file system
A file system that is configured to serve more than one node. See also shared disk.
single data center processing
Processing that occurs independently within one data center so that files can continue processing during a data center outage.
split-brain
An error state in which the data in one part of a highly available clustered application or system is inconsistent with another due to a network partition or failure, and results in two sets of conflicting data.
static routing channel
A routing channel that identifies the consumer when the routing channel is created.
Sterling File Gateway partner (SFG partner)
An organization such as a trading partner or a business unit. A partner can be a producer or a consumer or both a producer and a consumer.
storage layer
A payload data layer that is located underneath the mailbox, where the payload actually resides.
stuck file
A file that remains unprocessed.
synchronous replication
The process of creating a copy of the data that is uploaded in a data center in at least one other data center.

T

tombstone compaction
The compaction that is triggered if SSTables has more garbage-collectable tombstones than tombstone_threshold.
tombstone object
A small subset of attributes of a deleted object. The tombstone object is retained for a specified period, and at the end of the specified period, the tombstone object is permanently deleted.
trading partner
A company, such as a manufacturer or a supplier, that agrees to exchange information using electronic data interchange, or an entity in an organization that sends and receives documents that are translated.
triggerState
A command that specifies the state of the trigger for a scheduled job.
truststore
In security, a storage object, either a file or a hardware cryptographic card, where public keys are stored in the form of trusted certificates, for authentication purposes in web transactions. In some applications, these trusted certificates are moved into the application keystore to be stored with the private keys.

U

user lookup REST service
An Sterling Integrator HTTPS server that will act as a REST interface for user information for the Global Mailbox engine.
user name
A string of characters that uniquely identifies a user to a system.

V

virtual root
A function that enables an administrator to associate a user ID with a mailbox so that the user can not see the hierarchy that embeds that mailbox.
