Administering mailboxes

Global Mailbox administrators can use the Mailbox Explorer in the Global Mailbox management tool to manage day-to-day maintenance activities on mailboxes.

Restriction: The root mailbox cannot be deleted.
Several options for managing your mailbox on the Mailbox Explorer page are available:
Messages
All messages that exist for the mailbox. The table includes information about the payload size, the creation date, extractions criteria, and the extraction rule that applies to each message in the mailbox.
Submailboxes
All mailboxes one level within the selected mailbox. You can search for a specific mailbox by entering the name of a submailbox in the Filter field.
Permissions
All users that have permissions to the mailbox. You can add new user permissions or change and remove existing user permissions.
Event Rules
The event rules that apply to the mailbox. You can subscribe the mailbox to an event rule, or remove the mailbox from an event rule.

An information icon on the Mailbox Explorer page provides information about the selected mailbox. This information includes the full mailbox name, the date the mailbox was created, and the application and user that the mailbox was created by.

A mailbox can be deleted even if it contains messages and submailboxes. All messages and submailboxes in a mailbox are deleted when the mailbox is deleted, and cannot be recovered. The requesting user must have the following permissions:
  • Delete messages (only if messages are in the mailbox)
  • Delete this mailbox
Global Mailbox administrators always have these permissions, so an administrator can delete any mailbox and all messages.
Remember: Global Mailbox administrators and users must take precautions to avoid deleting mailboxes that contain messages that need to be retained. Do not delete mailboxes that contain submailboxes that are still in use. Delete mailboxes that are no longer needed, and that do not have submailboxes or messages that are needed.
